She's Come Undone - book cover picture

I am an avid reader, and this is just about the best novel I have ever read. Dolores is a complex character, one who I felt a range of emotions toward as I read the book. Wally Lamb does not spare her from terribly difficult experiences that led me to feel sad and sorry for her, nor does he spare her from making foolish mistakes that made me want to say to her, "Stop! Don't do it!" Like other reviewers, I was surprised and impressed that a male author had so completely and believably captured the female protagonist. It is very well written--even minor characters like her college roommate are distinctive and memorable, and her emotional growth throughout the book is well chronicled and mesmerizing to read about. I recommend this book very, very highly.

The Thief Lord - book cover picture

This book is really good! I read this book because it was written by the same author as Inkheart and I loved Inkheart so I gave The Thief Lord a try, and I even liked it better then Inkheart! It's an awsome book, the charectors I think are the best. They each have there own personality. My favorite out of them have to be Prosper and Scipio AKA The Thief Lord. This book has a lot of exiting twists and turns. And I love the Venice setting. If you want an adventure, fantisy book, then this would be perfact for you! Every one will love this book! I know I sure do!

He Shall Thunder in the Sky - book cover picture

Like many readers, I was reeling last year at the end of Falcon. How could MPM possibly pull this one out of where she left it? I couldn't imagine. Especially since she would have to do it in such a way that it didn't smack of contrivance. but she's done it. This is not only a stirring conclusion to the Manuscript H quartet, it's possibly one of the best Amelias ever. I don't want to go on, because I'll give something away, but -- to all who despaired at the end of Falcon, take heart! She's going somewhere with this, really, and you want to have faith in her. I promise.

The Grapes of Wrath - book cover picture

That kind of review is to be expected from someone who can't even spell "description" correctly. Yes, to illiterate people, this book might not be so interesting, but to everyone else, it is a story about a huge part of America's history. The reason there is so much description is because Steinbeck wants to take the audience to this point in time, and show us how the family dealt with this tragedy.

Patty Jane's House of Curl (Ballantine Reader's Circle) - book cover picture

Feminine fiction at its finest. Oh, BRIDGET JONES and similar titles are fine, but how refreshing it is to find a heroine in "women's fiction" who's concerned with something other than calories or the size of her hips.
Patty Jane is an engaging character, an abandoned wife who pulls herself up by her bootstraps to raise her child, and the love stories are funny, sad, and charming. I recommend it highly.

The Three Musketeers : An Abridgement by Lord Sudley (Puffin Classics) - book cover picture

The story of the Three Musketeers is really the story of how D'artagnan became the Fourth Musketeer.D'Artagnan overcomes many obstacles and finaly convinces Cardinal Richelieu of his sincerity. The true villain of the story isn't the Cardinal, but his ruthless agent,Milady de Winter, who takes much into her own hands in her revenge on D'Artagnan and his friends.Athos is the noblest musketeer of them all, having come through tragedy which he only gradualy reveals to his friends.Athos becomes D'Artagnan's best friend in the musketeers, while Porthos provides laughs and Aramis shows a sensitive, poetic side. The tale has much of actual French history, and a large percentage of the characters have definite historical counterparts.Dumas is one of the best authors when it comes to historical fiction.

Disregard my comments ...

Gilead: A Novel - book cover picture

You should disregard my comments because I have not yet read Gilead. What I did do is hear Ms. Robinson read from it on the Diane Rehm show yesterday ... It was movingly and tenderly rendered by someone who thinks deeply about the human experience. I ran right out to my Barnes and Noble (sic!) and bought their last copy to give my wife.

It takes a beautiful soul to write from the heart with such simplicity, such openness, such awareness of the nuances of our lives, be they simple or hopelessly complex. I thank her for trusting us, her readers, with her private thoughts.

Interesting that the reviews here are so polarized. Is this a reflection of our more general polarization? But it's late, and I ramble.

Kudos to Marylynne. Her humanity and love for her fellow man shine brilliantly in her prose.

What's Heaven? - book cover picture

I keep several copies of this book on hand to give to friends with small children when a grandparent dies. It's also a good therapeutic tool when a surviving grandparent reads it to a grandchild. No, it's not an all-encompassing discussion on death or God. But anyone who has been around small children knows that an explanation for one simple question will raise ten more questions. And those questions may not come until days or weeks later. At that point, "What's Heaven" can be revisited, or the discussion can lead to more in-depth issues.

What a play should be

Book title: Wit : A Play

Wit : A Play - book cover picture

This is the ideal play. It's intelligent, moving, witty (as you could probably guess), and really makes you examine what you value as important in your life. This is more than just a story of a woman dealing with cancer, it is about a woman dealing with her views on life as a whole. (The play also manages to incorporate some great John Donne poetry.) The scene in which Vivian's teacher reads _The Runaway Bunny_ is one of the most single touching scenes ever written for the stage. Buy it, read it, see it, this is a great play.
