Trick of Light - book cover picture

Living in Tennessee a lot of things in this book hit really close to home. Peter Hernon struck a cord because what the book depicts really could happen. I thought this book was extremly well written and researched. There was extensive detail and a lot of creativity. It is one of my favorites. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes indepth realistic literature. It isn't a book for the timid.

Stunning. What this man can do with sentences...

East Is East (Contemporary American Fiction) - book cover picture

In "East is East," T.C. Boyle shows what amazing things writers can do with sentences. I have never read another novel with better point-of-view characterization. Forget you readers out there; if you're a writer, you HAVE TO read this book. Yes, the plot is entertaining, but watch how he gets inside the heads of his characters and portrays them from the inside out. Whenever I'm feeling down about my own writing, I pull this novel off the shelf and read from it. One of the most original novels I've ever read.

This plantation survived the Civil War and is waiting for some one. The Racial State : Germany 1933-1945 - book cover picture

Many Americans can't understand how Germany developed a racial state in the midst of modernism. This book gives vivid insight into the mechanisms & development of fascism. The National Socialist Party didn't just happen. The machinery of the state developed under the right conditions with the help of many non-military individuals, including both professors & doctors. Not only is this book interesting for its historical information, reading it enlightens the reader to more recent fascist development. After reading this book, you will never say it can't happen here.

We Don't Die: George Anderson's Conversations With the Other Side - book cover picture

I have read two of George Anderson's books now. The first being OUR CHILDREN FOREVER. I have just finished WE DON'T DIE. The premise is the same in both books. After reading them it only confirms my strong belief that there is an afterlife. I am not religious and have little belief in God but I know our engergy lives on. George Anderson is a gifted Medium. He has used his spiritual powers well. I enjoyed both books but WE DON'T DIE was a bit dull in parts where the authors go on & on with tales of people trying to debunk Mr. Andersons gift. I found myself skimming thru parts. However, It's a fact filled book worth anyones time to learn of life after death.

Finally, a good addition to the New Jedi Order...

Edge of Victory I: Conquest (Star Wars: The New Jedi Order, Book 7) - book cover picture

Wow, finally a return to the Star Wars Universe with a truelly good novel. I loved it. Up till now the Yuuzhan Vong have seemed an invincible foe with a perfect society. But as the book develops you see how imperfect they really are. You can see how the New Republic still has a chance in this war. My congrats to Greg Keyes for adding a superb addition to the New Jedi Order that, up until now, seemed to be dying. I haven't read a Star Wars book this good since Visions of the Future. Don't give up on Star Wars literature before you take a look at this book...I can't wait to read the sequal!May the Force be with you!

A real thriller with a magnificent plot twist

Book title: Life of Pi

Life of Pi - book cover picture

The Life of Pi was an extraordinary surprise in the way it developed from "cutesy" to suspenseful to thrilling. One of the few modern books I have read with a deeply profound yet easily understood message. Although the protagonist is a teenage boy from India with a religious identity crisis, the reader quickly relates to him, and the events in the book genuinely draw the reader into his corner. Martel's prose is enjoyably descriptive, and he displays a great deal of insight into the human mind (and the book is actually a handy survival manual). I promise you will find yourself recommending this uniquely entertaining book to fellow readers. You do yourself a disservice if you read the last chapter early.

A tragedy - a revelation of what went before, and after.

Eden Close - book cover picture

The author enables you to walk through the door and into the rather mundane lives of individuals whose common past links them together in ways that are both sad and touching. The author sensitively reveals complex emotions that guide and direct the actions of people living their lives one day at a time. Shades of gray are everywhere. The reader's interest is heightened by the revelation of previously undisclosed facts, then is peaked further when even more "secrets" are revealed. Subtle clues, quietly inserted in sentences of simple dialogue, keep one reading far into the night.I liked the undercurrents that ran throughout the book, and the subdued display of feelings which were carefully displayed by the various characters. This was the first book by Anita Shreve I have read. I am rushing to the local library to search for other books by this author!!

Memories of Summer - book cover picture

I thought this book was excelent. I felt that I could understand how Lyric was feeling. It was a very touching and moving novel that made me realize that some of my problems that I think are awful really aren't that big of a deal. It made me realize that there will always be someone in the world that will have a bigger problem than me.
This book made a big difference in my life, and could do so to others. I recomend this book to anyone looking for a great novel that you will never want to give up.

I Re-Read Banner in the Sky Every Few Years

Book title: Banner in the Sky

Banner in the Sky - book cover picture

I first read Banner as a boy and was so taken away with the drama that I read it so fast and didn't even understand the ending. Did he ever make it to the top? I've since gone on to re-read Banner many times over the years and am always thrilled with the crystal clear writing and cold details. And I always end up reading the final climb all at once. Into Thin Air is amazing, but sorely lacks the quality of writing that Banner has. If you like the outdoors this book will blow you away.
