Orlando - book cover picture

The theorist- Orlando, who wakes up every morning to a new intrest, fear, love or body. From Elizabeth's court, to modern day vehicles, he starts as a young boy in search of a "why" and a "how". Why does love twist life? How does a real Poet think? He finds himself writing, reading, and pondering nonstop in search of real answers. And yet is never satisfied.
On a cold morning Olralndo wakes up a woman. This stirs up even more questions and feelings on the space around her. Time is flying, she goes through over two hundred years of change. Experiencing pregnancy, travel, lost love, two sexes, and marrage, she ends a long emotional book with questions, and color. In my opinon, Orlando lives on

The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge - book cover picture

I always love when I find out about a new man of wisdom... To me Don Juan's teachings point to the moon of Zen. Reading about the way of the warrior something arises in you. You become more ready to handle the truth and realize that your journey on this Earth experiencing the fountain of Life is more important than the respect that you sought before. Don Juan also uses "power plants" to facilitate Castaneda's awareness of the land beyond the mind. It would be foolish to write this off as purely drug use. Our "modern" society aside, these plants of the Earth were often used for spiritual realization. It isn't the end, but can open a door...This book is best understood in context of the other books in the series which go into greater detail on the essential teaching.

Macroeconomics in the Global Economy - book cover picture

This it is the book that invited me to study Macroeconomics. It is a text that without losing the scientific rigor, appears simple and useful, simultaneously as deep and integral, without use of heavy mathematics, which normally invites students of the first courses to abandom the subject. I recommend it widely

The Screwtape Letters - book cover picture

C.S. Lewis is one of the smartest authors that I have ever read. The way he writes, from the viewpoint of a demon, borders on blasphemy and cynicism when taken out-of-context. One has to dig deaper to find the real meaning of this book. Lewis is able to tear the fabric of religion to expose the pitfalls of nominal Christianity and Atheism. In doing so, he reminds the reader of the real meaning of Christianity -- it is a true parternship with God, not a social entity. Lewis triumphs in this masterpiece. Everyone, Christian and Atheist, should read this book to realize the human weakness of ignorance. When it comes to life, God is in control.

Angela's Ashes: A Memoir of a Childhood - book cover picture

After I read the Book "The Catcher in the Rye" It gave me a certain feeling, that I had never felt before while reading a book. I had spent the better part of ten years looking for a book that gave me this same feeling when I read it, but none of them quite did the job until I read "Angelas Ashes" Not since "The Catcher in the Rye" has there been a book so poinigent and well written, and that would make you laugh out loud on one page, and then hold back tears on the next page. I cant wait to read "'Tis" I just hope it is half as good as "Angelas ashes"

Cinnamon Peeler Selected Poems - book cover picture

Michael Ondaatje knows how to mix humor, beauty, sadness, and acute observation together to make lovely works of art. This collection contains a great variety of poetry, from simple and touching observations about his children, to deeply imagined distant moments of wonder. My favorite is "Pure Memory/Chris Dewdney" which actually made me cry twice for two different reasons when I first read it. I will say no more here. "Elimination Dance" is also a fun one to read out loud. "The Cinnamon Peeler" itself is a fantastic love poem. There is so much good stuff in this.

Enchanters' End Game (The Belgariad, Book 5) - book cover picture

I can't QUITE understand the points some of us are trying to get across here. Immature writng? Far from, i completely disagree, I would say the Belgariad as a whole (And this book in particular) is probably some of the best stuff i have ever written. And as for some of the other suggestions people have had, well.. Lord of the Rings had our characters spending the first 1,000 pages doing, erm, well... nothing? and how about the Wheel of Time where are *Ahem* supposed heroes spent 150 pages doing, erm, nothing? Tw's excellent MS+T series is about the only one i would agree with - this one does come close to Eddings writing. Also, George RR Martin's Game of Thrones would be another good tale. At least this book has characters you can like - with the wheel of time I hated it nearly half the time any character spoke! This is certainly some of, if not THE best fnatasy I have ever read.

A better book than A Cold Six Thousand

The Big Nowhere - book cover picture

This book was my second Ellroy book after being disappointed with "A Cold Six Thousand". This book is a murder mystery set in LA 1950. The mystery is interesting and the cross stories of the three main charactars makes them interesting and likable. None of the charactars in Six Thousand had those qualities. This isnt a feel good book though so don't look for a happy ending. If you are looking for an Ellroy book to try out this one may be it. Its a good read and is hard to put down at times.

Do you know the definition of epic?

The Path of Daggers (The Wheel of Time, Book 8) - book cover picture

Hello, people! To all the so-called critics out there whining about the length, an epic fantasy is supposed to be long. Also, I'm tired of hearing about "filler novels", and then saying how great Eddings is. See his Sorceress of Darshiva. And what about your precious Mat? Jordan leaves you hanging, it's called a writing technique. Personally, I think if you can't handle the style of writing that Jordan masters, drop the book. And about Nynaeve. Each character has their idiosynchracies. These set them apart from the rest of the people. So grow up. Filler novels set the stage for the climax. PoD is giving you clues of what's gonna be in the later books. Personally, I think that this is a great book, but, if you're new to the series, start at the beginning, or else you'll have no clue to what's going on.

Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed - book cover picture

Professor Diamond's impeccable credentials as a scientist and a writer were well established with GG&S. If you felt entertained, or better yet, enlightened, by his last book, you'll love this one. Collapse feels like almost a sequel, in which he turns his attention from the function of ancient societies to ours today. If you aren't startled into some serious thinking about modern society today after reading this well-researched, smoothly-written book, it isn't Diamond's fault - it's your own.
