Somehow, after eating a bowl of alphabet soup, Martha the dog can speak! (There's a very funny illustration of the letters going to her brain instead of her stomach; no further explanation is necessary!). But being able to speak is not the same as knowing when to speak (she interrupts people), how much to say (she talks incessantly), or what to say (she can be a little rude at times).A very funny book, with nice loopy pictures, a subtle lesson in manners, and a happy outcome (except for the would-be burglar). One of a series of "Martha" books, this would make a great gift for young children, and is one of those special finds that adult will enjoy reading as well!

A Book to Remember

I first read this book in Grade 4. The year was 1979. The school was hooked up with a book club, I think it was Scholastic, and I used to count the days until the new catalogue came into the school each week. I remember when I first saw this book in the catologue, the cover had a picture of the boy next to a giant wall, leaning over his crutches. I immediately ordered it. I don't know if this is the same version as the one noted here. I do know that it stuck with me for many years and helped to inspire in me a love of reading. I thought so much of it that the reason I came across it here today was because I was curious if it was still in print.

This book is incredible not just for the data it presents, but for the first chapter, which presents an exceptional picture of the damage that bad survey data can have on an entire nation. The incredibly ill-designed surveys of the past have warped American's views of themselves and our country, and the book details why. If there was ever a treatise on why we should all learn statistics, this is it.

Inside the walls of Troy was a very interesting book. Our class even meet the author Clemence McLaren since she lives right next to our campus. I could tell that her fun personality was the same is in the book. I really learned a lot about the Greek character's and additude. The book has a excellent story line combined with true facts and figures. If your interested in this book you should get it, its worth it.

THE SALARYMAN'S WIFE is the first entry in this new series featuring Rei Shimura as an American teaching English in Japan. In this one she's on vacation, giving us a neat glimpse at leisure life in Japan. Massey's easy style makes this a joy to read. The book offers a nice little list of characters at the front, in case we get mixed up before the end of this 424-page monster. (Yes, it's too long!) But I was only confused by two of the characters, and only briefly. So don't worry about the Asian names. The book has a bit of everything: violence, romance, a good basic whodunit, some comic and some seedy characters, and a really cool heroine. And it has some VERY sexy moments! I'd call it flirtatious and seductive. I really want to read the next one!! FYI, this book won the Agatha Award for 1997.
