Whoever states that repressed memories don't exist must be very unfamiliar with victims of trauma. Adults often don't remember a car crash or a hostage situation. Why would a child choose to remember horrific abuse? Therapy trends come and go, but the basics of the mind, psychology and psychiatry stay the same. Sybil is the story of a woman with multiple selves, each one developed to handle different life stresses and situations. Look up "dissociative disorder" at google.com to find out more about the causes and manifestations of such disorders.

5 STARS?Maybe that's a little high, after all, hacking your way through this statistical rain forest with all it's multiple regression, and fiercely territorial dummy variables will tire your machete arm. However, I DARE you to find a book on this issue with even half the detailed, checked and rechecked, considered and reconsidered statistical analysis of "More Guns, Less Crime." Read the literature for yourself, most authors are content to let someone else do the statistics, but Mr. Lott simply won't let any detail rest. Responding to criticism of his methods, he returns time and again to toy with different variables in his calculations, and consistently emerges with the same results.

Buy, and read the whole series

I have never encountered a more repulsive set of characters than those within the pages of this series, but the books are impossible to put down. The "Gap" series and the "Mirror" dualogy are some of my favorites, ever! It has been a few years since I read them but I don't recall being put off by the first book at all. I bought them all as soon as they were published. A great read - twisted (what else would you expect), surprising and original. Donaldson is tops!

Rita says this book gets five stars....

My granddaughter Rita is helping me write this review. She says this is one of her favorite books, and she recommends it to other kids. Rita read this book when she was in first grade. She's in second grade this year.Rita says the story starts when the familiy is going on a camping trip. She says Amelia's Dad says "Let's Hit the Road" and and Amelia picks up a stick and starts hitting the road. Amelia seems to always get things wrong. When they get to the campsite she falls in the river and her clothes are all wet. But one day, Amelia's Dad forgets his own birthday, so Amelia Bedelia makes a cake and fancy dinner for him. And the family starts singing "Happy Birthday to You." And he thanks Amelia Bedelia for the cake. Amelia finally does something that pleases her Dad. The End.

if you like cuando era puertarriquena, you'll LOVE this

i absolutely loved "when i was puertorican", and wondered if this could be as good. it's AS good, if not better, and I highly recommend this book if you like esmeralda santiago. you will not be disappointed. Negi's troubles in NYC are similiar to those of everyone and you really get involved with her character. it makes me want to write a memoir, but nobody can do it like santiago.
