Hard Eight : A Stephanie Plum Novel (A Stephanie Plum Novel) - book cover picture

After some disappointment with the seventh installment in the Stephanie Plum series, I approached this one with some trepidation. But, Stephanie and Joe, Ranger and Lula, Bob and Grandma Mazur are back!! And they are better than ever in a novel that is a little darker than its predecessors, but a good solid story full of the belly laughs we've all come to expect in a Plum!! I am now eagerly awaiting #9--only about a year to go!!

Great Basketball Book!

Drive : The Story of My Life - book cover picture

This book truely is a great basketball book. Obviously written by one of the NBA's greatest players, you get to be in the mind of Larry Bird, and see for yourself what he was like, from his point of view. The book spends the majority of the time on his NBA because of the success he had as a player. I really liked the fact that Larry gave his respect to his opponents and their fans, and that he didn't write from a egotistical stand point. There were only two things that I think could've been better the book, the first was that it didn't really talk too much his work ethic in his high school years. It did mention it occasionaly, and obviously we know he had a great work ethic, it just didn't mention it much. The other thing was the Indiana State-Michigan State rivalry. Again, it mentioned it, but it didn't talk about it that much. Overall, I loved the book and I think you will too! Read it!

The Lion's Pride: Theodore Roosevelt and His Family in Peace and War - book cover picture

While this book is not a history book per se, mainly because the author tends to gloss over certain details, this is a very interesting and compelling study of the nature and character of Theodore Roosevelt and his four sons. This subject is one that is usually glossed over in the history books, and I for one am glad to see a treatment of the subject, especially one as easily understood as this is. If you are interested at all in Theodore Roosevelt, I must recommend this book.

Miss Zukas and the Raven's Dance - book cover picture

I read this on vacation under Hawaii's sun and was ever so grateful not to be in the gray and rainy Washington town with Ms Zukas. As a librarian, I enjoyed the librarian detective, but hope my profession isn't peopled by too many as spacy as "Ms. Moonbeam" or as hidebound and routine-driven as Ms. Zukas. Young Frank was appealing, and Ms. Zukas's free-spirited friend was beguiling. When I got back to town I went to a bookstore and purchased another paperback in the series. I guess I'm hooked.

The Tracks of Angels - book cover picture

Kelly Dwyer has written what I consider to be one of the most luminous and beautifully written books thatI have ever read. Actually, I have read it four times and I plan to reread it many times. It is the story I wish I had written. With poetry, grace and soul, she writes of a traumatized young woman, Laura Neuman, and her search for her past, herself and her spirituality. I only wish she would write another book soon. I found this story to be so beautiful and so well written that I have recommended it and given it as a present to everyone I can.

I Am the cheese - book cover picture

I Am The Cheese is one of the most beautiful books I have read in my entire life, and because I was so surprised by this tale I was forced to read it several times. I Am The Cheese is the poetic story of self-discovery and confusion narrarated by a high school boy named Adam Farmer. His family is one of many dark secrets because of the very dark, threatening world around them, and the Farmers' tale reveals the significance of the phrase "trust no one." In the beginning of the book Adam is on his way from Massachusetts to Vermont to visit his father, and as the story unwinds both the reader and Adam learn many things about the boy's life...Unpredictable, surprising, and oddly familiar secrets about a boy who anyone who comes into contact with this novel may assume that they actually know.

Still Life with Crows - book cover picture

I love & eagerly anticipate all the Child/Preston novels to date, so imagine my surprise when I found that the publication of this one had slipped me by! It's wonderful! Despite some reviewers saying that the villian was a letdown, I believe the identity creeped me out even more. And let's not even talk about the motive behind all this! But to understand that, you have to read to the last pages. It makes me shiver just to think about it again! I also liked Corrie-I hope she's brought back in the future. I especially liked the sly hints about past books that the authors slid in there. That's a move worthy of Sam Raimi. Altogether, I can't wait until the next one- and I won't let that one slip by me!

Wasted - book cover picture

What a book. This book is excellent in many ways. It explains the eating disorder but expresses Marya's feelings and shows it in from a very real point of view. It isn't a typical tale of eating disorders that follows the "normal" chronological order of the disease. She (marya) is a very real person that you will find yourself relating to. The book makes you look at the world through her frightened eyes. A very raw and real story. Two big thumbs up!!

Absorbing Rendering of JFK?s Assassination

Book title: Libra
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Libra - book cover picture

I picked up "Libra" as a great Don Delillo fan who wondered how he handled the familiar material of JFK's assassination. I was not disappointed. In "Libra", DeLillo successfully imagines the life of Oswald, building a believable emotional and historical portrait of the man who would commit this murder. He also creates a believable Ruby, drug addicted and not in control of his life, who would have twisted reasons for shooting Oswald. Finally, he presents a murder conspiracy that is plausible, a marginal operation on the political fringe that needs considerable luck to succeed. "Libra" is an imaginative tour de force that helps explain how this tragedy happened.
