Last Exit to Brooklyn - book cover picture

Selby takes the english language and scrambles it with a typewriter. This is a very TASTY book but hard to stomach for some because of gut wrenching subject matter; it's about hatred, poverty, gangs, violence, unions, alcoholism, drug addiction, abusive marriages- being torn apart from the inside and doing nothing about it except to look in the mirror. It is not for the squeamish or the literarely faint. And forget everything you ever learned in school about prose- this is the real thing- tough and razor blade sharp

Book of Nightmares (Diadem: A Fantasy Mystery, No. 6) - book cover picture

I just loved this book. I read all of the Diadem books and I loved everyone of them. I don't know why he didn't keep writing them. If anyone is thinking of buying this book or any of the others you'll love it as much as I did. It's great for people of all ages. If he started writing the Diadem books again I'd be the first inline to get them. I love to read all kinds of books but I'm still very picky. You won't be disapointed if you get this book.

Hilarious, haunting, and crazily balanced

Paradise Fever: Growing Up in the Shadow of the New Age - book cover picture

By turns hilarious and haunting, this memoir about growing up on the furtherest fringes of the New Age achieves a crazy kind of balance--a tilt-a-whirl balance. It's not a simply an expose of New Age self-absorption and infantilism (though it certainly is that). It's written by someone trying to make sense of his own wacky childhood experience, and trying to capture what was wonderful and not-so-wonderful about his fantastical father. What comes through is the author's basic sanity. The elder Tompkins is completely at home in the subterranean, labyrinthine byways of the occult. The author isn't--for all his drug and alcohol abuse, his feet are planted in this world. What struck me was how his feelings and attitudes and speculations about his father seemed so universal. Improbably, I saw my own, completely average, un-New Age dad in the elder Tompkins. The author gets at the essential mysteriousness of our fathers.

One Hundred Years of Solitude - book cover picture

I read this book once nearly 30 years ago and yet many of the images from it remain vibrant for me. I remember picking up the book in the dorm room of a friend and laughing at the cover blurb: "You emerge from this book as if from a dream, the mind on fire." And my friend said, "You know, the strange thing is that this is a pretty good description." And he and the reviewer were right.

An inspiring overview of human development

Global Brain: The Evolution of Mass Mind from the Big Bang to the 21st Century - book cover picture

Howard Bloom gives an inspiring overview of the development of life on earth, providing a context to understand the bewildering complexity of modernlife. If we are to understand human nature, we must delve into the history of life and find the patterns of emergence that have brought us to the present day.In a way there is nothing new in the book as we look at individual and group selection, the history of Sparta,Athens through to today, some chaos and complexity, etc. What gives the magic is the way we follow a thread of the interactions of four forces: conformity enforcers, diversity generators, inner judges and resource shifters. The interactions of these four factors show us how bacteria evolved to become multicellular organism and through to to humans. It also provides a framework whereby a global brain that we can all link into can naturally emerge and lead us to a new level of being. I recommend this book to anyone interested in exploring human nature.

The Pulitzer Prize was long overdue

Annals of the Former World - book cover picture

John McPhee has re-written the book on non-fiction, turning science and history into one gripping drama after another in writing that brings to mind the finest Sunday newspaper features. No matter the subject, he's set the standard by which others should be measured; the Pulitzer committee couldn't have chosen better. It's especially proper that this book be so honored, as it represents a body of work spanning many years and concerning what I suspect is McPhee's very favorite subject matter; geology and natural history. Call it his "life achievement award" but don't tell him that (we need him to keep writing for ages to come). John, I've got a shelf set aside just for your books in my library but it's half empty all the time - I can't stop lending them out.

Comprehensive and Clear Analysis of a Difficult Thinker

The Philosophy of Schopenhauer - book cover picture

Just having read Magee's brilliant book about Richard Wagner -- THE TRISTAN CHORD -- I decided to check out his book about my favorite modern phlosopher. I don't have too much to add to what others have said, except to say that if you're not going to take the time to read Schopenhaur, then this is perhaps the best way to become acquainted with his ideas, which still have relevancy almost a century and a half after his death. Just as Schopenhauer was an unusually clear and gifted writer among philosophers, Magee possesses the same qualities as an explicator. Furthermore, his analyses of Schopenhauer's postumous influence really helps contextualize his importance historically (Sigmund Freud, who stole some of his best ideas from Schopenhaur, considered him one of the five greatest men who ever lived. There is also much in Jung -- not to mention Albert Einstein -- that has its origins in Schopenhauer).

The Chronicles of Narnia Set - book cover picture

I too first heard of these books almost 30 yrs ago in my 4th grade teacher read "The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe" to us in class. Each time I am sad about something I read this wonderful collection. There will never be another set of books that has moved me or given me so much peace inside, when the world around us seems so dismal. Narnia has become my "safe-haven" and Aslan my friend. This is definately a must read for ANY age, young or old.

The Gifts of the Jews: How a Tribe of Desert Nomads Changed the Way Everyone Thinks and Feels (Hinges of History, Vol. 2) - book cover picture

The Gift of the Jews is the most exciting book I've read. It's not exciting in the way a detective novel, a courtroom drama or a Dean Koontz book is exciting. I found it exciting because it led me down a path I had spent years seeking--a path to God. As a child, I believed in God, but in my college years, studying religion, philosophy, history and anthropology, I lost my belief in "Nature's God." This book, which I bought because I wanted to learn all the wonderful things Jews had done over the last 6,000 years, turned my heart to God. This book told me a secret--where to find God. I looked in that place, and "Eureka," I found the Holy One. I recommend this book for serious seekers of the Eternal, not eternal life, not an answer to questions of everyday life, but life and its real meaning. I admire the author, Thomas Cahill, very much for his clear prose and gentle style. I plan to read his book on Ireland this summer.

Everyday Stalinism: Ordinary Life in Extraordinary Times: Soviet Russia in the 1930s - book cover picture

Life in Stalin's Russia must have been extremely hard for all concerned, yet Sheila Fitzpatrick has managed to create a fascinating and readable book. There is a great deal of detail based on meticulous research, but at the same time there is an awareness of ordinary people, and some humour: if you needed to invent a new life for yourself, it was best to claim that you had been born in Kiev, since their records were destroyed in the Civil War. The strongest message comes at the end, that with everything "homo sovieticus" had to endure, he/she was a survivor. As a teacher of 20th century history I can totally recommend this book to anyone, student or general reader, who wants to understand this period and these remarkable people.
