Possibly the funniest book ever written

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - book cover picture

Despite the trashing that this book has taken on the review boards this book was rated one of the Top 100 Books of the Twentieth Century. Why? It mercilessly exposes the hypocrisy and humor of everything in human society, from the ridiculous to the sacred. Examples - the ridiculousness of atheism (Babel fish), inherent human supremacy (dolphins and fiendishly clever mice), ethical conundrums (Lintilla), engineers (Zlarty Bartfast), egomaniacal thieves (Zaphod Beeblebrocks), economists (defoliating the planet to increase the value of the leaf as currency), philosophers (the Babel fish again), inefficiency of governments (the destruction of the Earth), and myriad others. I have gotten more enjoyment from this book than almost anything else I have ever read. It is also worth every cent to purchase the BBC audio adaptation of the story.

The Fiery Cross - book cover picture

For those of us who patiently or impatiently wait for the newest novel, we cannot be anything but in awe of Ms. Gabaldon.
This series has been like an obsession with me, and it's hard to find it's equivalent to read while suffering the long dry periods between books. "The Fiery Cross" was another wonderful chapter in the lives of these very special characters. I will always keep these books to loan out and re-read over and over again. Perhaps someday, Diana will explain Jamie's ghost appearing to Frank Randall in the first book, "Outlander". Until then I patiently await the next one.......

The Samuelson of Finance

Options, Futures, and Other Derivatives (5th Edition) - book cover picture

There is a reason that this text has been in print for so many years - in my view it is the Samuelson of the financial world because there is no other work that presents such a cogent as well as comprehensive introduction to the mechanics of derivatives securities. As a person involved in dealing with these monsters on a daily basis, Hull lives on my desk and has been a constant source of reference. It is also widely used by others in the industry. If Wiener Processes and Ito's Lemma are part of your life, this book is the one to get! PS...the solutions manual is a very useful companion if you want to get full value out of the book, but I have always thought it unfair of textbook publishers to print separate solutions texts when the main work is so expensive in the first place. Is it so hard or costly to tack on 50 extra pages, or it the old story of the monopolist extracting his due?

Tanner's back for another trek across Europe. A delight.

Book title: Tanner's Twelve Swingers: An Evan Tanner Mystery (Evan Tanner Mystery Series, 3)
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Mass Market Paperback
Tanner's Twelve Swingers: An Evan Tanner Mystery (Evan Tanner Mystery Series, 3) - book cover picture

. Tanner is back in the third of eight books in the series. This one is much better than the first two. Again Tanner leaves NYC to trek across Europe, sneak across boarders. This time the trip takes him from home to Yugoslavia north to Russia. Keeping in mind this adventure as wells as the two others takes place before the brake up of the Soviet Union and the problems and war with the breakup of Yugoslavia. Block's historical accounts are excellent and add to the excitement of the book. It's well paced and I look forward to the others in the series. At this point in time they are on backorder at amazon.com.

Best 20th Century Theological Work

Nature and Destiny of Man, vol. 1: Human Nature - book cover picture

This work is known to be a classic, and in my opinion, it is the best written last century. I even enjoyed R. Niebuhr better than Tillich and Barth. His erudition and conclusions are powerful and engaging. I recommend reading this for those familiar with political thought and philosophy of the modern era. By no means is this work parochial, it scope makes it a enthralling read even for those who find themselves outside to sprectrum of Christian belief.

I find myself using the phrase "It's a Fine Balance" more...

A fine balance - book cover picture

A Fine Balance was my first experience reading Mistry's works. From the very beginning I found myself tied to the characters - I wanted to know more about them, even though I felt I had little in common with them. The only other work set in India that I had read was _Life of Pi_. While I enjoyed that read, it didn't do much to expose me to the day-to-day struggles of Balance's characters from different castes.I have to say, though, that what affected me most about this work was how it was drawn to a close. The ending will stick with me for a long time. Now, when I use the phrase "It's a fine balance", I know that our lives are precariously balanced, much like the circus child depicted on the cover. My recommendation is to read this work, then immediately read Mistry's _Family Matters_ to get a different view into Mistry's view of Indian culture.I also recommend that you take the time to look up the various Hindi words and names sprinkled throughout this work. The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian (Conan of Cimmeria, Book 1) - book cover picture

Finally, Conan presented as Robert E. Howard intended. If you were hooked on Howard by reading the old Lancer/Ace versions of Conan, you ain't seen nothin' yet. The Del Rey edition presents Howard's stories as he wrote them, no editorial interference, using the original typescripts whenever possible. For me, it was like reading Conan for the first time. Not only do you get thirteen Conan stories, but also several fragments/synopsises and a rough draft or two, an interesting look into Howard's creative process. Also included is Howard's "Hyborian Age" essay, which outlines beautifully the world in which Conan lived, a couple of maps drawn by the author himself, and a few other goodies. The book is beautifully packaged with fine illustrations by Mark Schultz and an introduction by Howard scholar Patrice Louinet. I can't wait for the next volumes!

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Book 1) - book cover picture

Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone was a fantastic book! It was about a boy named Harry Potter who is taken care of by his aunt Petunia, uncle Vernon, and an annoeying 10 year old cousin named Dudley. His parents died by a death causing curse. Harry has to go to a school called Hogwarts, school of witch and wizardry, where some stange things start to happen. This is one of the BEST books that I have ever read! I would reccomend it to anyone who likes fantasy and adventurous books. I would rate this book a definite 5 star out of 5 star! I liked this book sooo much that I bought the next Harry Potter book called Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, which I am currently reading. Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone is a GREAT book!

Unnatural Exposure - book cover picture

Dr. Kay Scarpetta's biggest fear is that, after all the violence that she has seen in her career, it would be a disease, a silent killer, that would end her life. In this mystery, the reader saw a new side of her and a possible change in her life. After seven prior books featuring this strong, main character, Cornwell is continuing to provide fresh and exciting stories with characters that continue to grow. Here Scarpetta was scared, cried and lost her temper as she dealt with an invisible killer. Her relationship got stronger and more clearer with Benton Wesley as she got closure on an old love. As Scarpetta investigated what she first thought was an other act of serial murder, Cornwell took us through some abrupt twists and turns that made this a well-crafted mystery.

One of the most important books in woman's studies.

Deborah, Golda, and Me - book cover picture

This book, which was a bestseller, is certainly one of the most important books in both women's studies and Jewish studies. Written with love, with force, seamlessly incorporating meticulous research with the author's insightful wisdom, it is a book that will be read for many years to come. I bought 6 copies of this book for friends, and all agreed it was probably the best book of this ilk that they had read. Ms Progebin is an extraordinary writer, with a great heart, and the abilty to weave love into the most hardened or bitter of facts. To all women, and most especially to all Jewsish women, READ IT! You will be greatly helped.
