He Shall Thunder in the Sky - book cover picture

As a faithful reader for some 10+ years now, I was a little disappointed with the previous Peabody book (A Falcon at the Portal). In fact, I nearly threw it out of the car, in which I was reading, at several points in the story. The joy I feel after finishing this book is 100 times greater than any problem I had with the last book. I am deeply indepted to Elizabeth Peters for creating characters that provoke such strong emotions. This book delivers the all wit, adventure, and plot twists I have come to expect from an Amelia Peabody mystery and more. While this is a wonderful book, if you don't read the rest of the series first you will not enjoy it one tenth as much as you could. Start with Crocodile on the Sandbank and don't stop until you've finished this one. You won't regret a minute of it.

The World's Religions: Our Great Wisdom Traditions - book cover picture

Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Christianity, Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism... Huston Smith handles each of these religions with such care and understanding one truly believes they are reading the words of a believer of each and not an outside observer. This book is wonderful for the numerous proverbs and wisdom of each religion alone, but it is an invaluable reference for anyone who wants a broader understanding of world religion. Each religion is covered simply and broadly, but with enough depth and feeling to give a reader a true sense of understanding. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

The Descent - book cover picture

This novel of immense proportions grabs the reader and takes them on a journey to the very bowels of the earth and into a society that is both as ancient and as scary as mankinds worst nightmares. It is a thought provoking book full of adventure, horror, and underground history that is written both beautifully and with a sense od darkness that would give even Steven King a run for his money. The story starts out with a discovery that will put a man and woman into the jaws of hell itself and boggles the mind and imagination of the reader. Please do yourself a favor and read this novel that captures so many legends and myths that will leave you questioning and thinking of your own beliefs that we were all led to believe for eons. There are plenty of surprises and colorful characters that just drive this novel to one of the top 10 best books I have read in my 40-years of life. I am really looking forward to Mr. Long's next novel and am hoping to see the main characters again.

Clarissa : Or the History of a Young Lady (Penguin Classics) - book cover picture

On first seeing this novel one is intially amazed at its length. This may be disconcerting at first, but it undoubtedly adds to the richness of the work;which is full of conflict, drama, beautifully written (and convincing dialogue)and of course well delineated characters. The characters are in fact so well delineated they eventually assume a life of their own, and seem to act out their roles almost independant of their creator. This is a splendid example of how effective the epistolary form could be, in moments of tension and inner conflict. Richardson probes his characters minds until the reader knows them inside out. A powerful and tragic work it deeply influenced succsessive authors well into the 19th century, and can still do so today

The Reluctant Viking (Timeswept) - book cover picture

This is one of the few books that I can't forget! It made me laugh and cry and while I didn't like Thork's fate, it was still one of the best books I've ever read. Through her vivid descriptions, use of ancient Norse and English we are taken back in time with Ruby. You'll feel like you're sitting in old England just watching it all unfold. If you've never read one of Sandra's books before read this one - you'll be hooked on her forever.

Michael Palin has done it again. He has produced a video that is a "must-see" for every classroom. His travels are educational, yet humorous. It makes the viewer feel as if they are there with Michael in Tromso, or riding the Nile Valley Express train or even getting a mud bath in Russia. I recommend it to everyone. It is clean and family-friendly. I only wish I had purchased my set from Amazon. I would have saved $20.

The Elephant's Child - book cover picture

Spanking or no, this is one of our very favorite books. People who get hung up on the spanking aspect of the book are missing the whole point of the story, and that, in part, is that you can't deny a child their curiosity, or you will pay for it "in the end". Jack Nicholsen was the perfect choice for narrating this story, too, he really made it come alive, esssspecially the bi-colored, python rock sssnake. Well done!

Simply the Best

A Painted House - book cover picture

This is a wonderful, wonderful book. Grishom shows that he is more than a formula writer. This book has passion and soul. It gives the reader insight to what life was like in the early days of America. Grishom's flair for details is outstanding. The Painted House is a great portait of the human spirit and condition. Grishom's characters are so real, you laugh with them, you cry with them, you root for them. You will want to be there picking cotton with them. You will feel the heat and you will sweat with them. You will also fall in love. This is his best work, it has that same great storytelling as A Time to Kill. This is a great, great story. You will not put the book down and you will cry! There will obviously be a sequel. I hope that the movie is as good. Buy a copy for yourself and a friend!

A Different Drummer - book cover picture

This is one of the most deeply imaginative, powerful books that I have ever read. William Melvin Kelley, clearly a master of the English language, gets right to the heart of the human spirit, in all of its bravery and its desire for dignity. It is the story of one man's leadership and impact. This novel will make you want to rise up and strive to make a difference in your life and in those of others. It is a haunting tale that will stay with you long past your first reading.

Getting Near to Baby (Newbery Honor Book) - book cover picture

My wife stages a Nutcracker production involving over 100 children. During long hours of rehearsals there is much down time. The young dancers get bored and irritable. One day she found Getting Near to Baby. (recommended by a grammar school teacher) In the Green Room one of the mothers began reading the novel to the waiting dancers and they were enthralled. It seemed to be a situation they could relate to. The language was "theirs" and the story struck a chord. It was difficult to get them to go onstage for rehearsal until they found what happened to the little girls up on the roof.
