It Takes A Rebel (Sweet Talkin' Guys) (Temptation, 769) - book cover picture

Put aside whatever errands you were going to do today and relax instead with Stephanie Bond's thoroughly enjoyable IT TAKES A REBEL. Her book starts with a meeting that had me laughing out loud and concludes with that sigh of contentment that is the hallmark of all really good romance novels. Bond's well-motivated characters Jack and Alex are endearing throughout. This story is a perfect balance of real emotional conflict between the hero and heroine and truly funny writing. If you were looking for a book that tugs your heartstrings and makes you laugh, you want IT TAKES A REBEL! You will not only love Jack and Alex, but also the secondary characters like Tuesday and Lana who help bring the humor to life.

Small Change Makes Great Waves in Believable History

Fox on the Rhine - book cover picture

The premise that Hitler dies in the bunker is a tiny change to history. He almost died that day, but fate saved him. Niles and Dobson took that privelege away and the book flows from there. As an ex-Army officer, with a background in WWII history, I'd say this is a rocking-good book! The soldiers feel like soldiers, and the combat scenes are very satisfying. Rommel comes across as a true General, like many that I have met in real life. Kudos to Niles and Dobson. I read it in one day, and it was a great day!BTW, I read the other reviews here, and I have to wonder if these guys are WWII or ground combat enthusiasts. I don't think 5 stars is too high a rating, but I certainly think 1 or 2 is far too low. If you like this stuff, you'll love this book!

Where the Red Fern Grows - book cover picture

"Where the Red Fern Grows" is a book about a young boy named Billy who loves dogs and coon hunting. Living in the Ozark Mountains, he has always wanted two coon hounds. However, he has never gotten them because his family is poor. One summer he gets the determination to go out and earn enough money to buy himself two coon hounds. When he finally gets the two hounds, he names them Little Ann and Old Dan. Billy goes out and hunts with them every night to make them the best and he ends up entering them in a contest. In the end, a fatal accident occurs while Billy is hunting that will leave you in tears.
This book is probably the best book I have ever read. It is a story of determination, love, and bravery. It is also a very detailed and descriptive book filled with similes, metaphors, and personification. I loved this book and I'm sure you would too. I would recommend this book to anyone of any age.

PHANTOM - book cover picture

If you love the story of Erik, you MUST MUST MUST read this book. This book is a fabulous telling of The Phantom of the Opera. I couldn't put the book down until I'd finished it because I was so drawn in to the story.
I've read many complaints about the ending of the book, but I personally was COMPLETLY SATISFIED. In every telling of the story I've always felt that Erik lost or got ripped off, but this book gave me the ending I've always wanted for him. He was really truly loved the way he deserved to be loved, and I couldn't have been left more satisfied.

Cast Two Shadows: The American Revolution in the South - book cover picture

Caroline Whitaker has just seen her childhood friend hanged, in front of her eyes. She descides then, how much she despises the Brittish. When her brother is wounded, she asks for permission from Colonel Rawdon (the soldier occupying her house for his headquarters)to go and bring him home. Caroline learns many things on her trip, including the growing love for her nigra grandmother. This book was great. I would rather do anything than not give it, or any other Rinaldi book 5 stars!

Uncommon Grounds : The History of Coffee and How It Transformed Our World - book cover picture

I loved this man's history of Coca-Cola, and his book on coffee is every bit as good. At least I learned one hard fact: coffee beans come in two types -- Arabica and Robusta. The good-tasting ones are the Arabica. The Robustas are vastly inferior, but are more robust plants. One commonly recurring theme then, is coffee merchants trying to sell as much Robusta as possible -- at Arabica prices! Instant coffee is a great refuge for Robusta beans, and so is espresso.Fascinating stuff. Highly recommended! I can't wait for his book on tea (hint hint).

A chef d'oeuvre by a past master

Book title: The Creationists
Rating: 5/5

The Creationists - book cover picture

A superb, comprehensive, and magisterial presentation of the history (and evolution) of the creationist movement in America by a noted historian of science. Professor Numbers is not unsympathetic with creationists, in spite of the fact that he knows better than to believe what they believe. He tells us that, in the interests of humility, he keeps on his desk an announcement of an anti-evolution speech that his father, a Seventh-Day Adventist preacher, gave some six decades ago.
For anyone who wants to know about this peculiarly American movement, Numbers is the place to start. Extensive bibliography for further reference

A voice from the other side

Run With the Hunted : Charles Bukowski Reader, A - book cover picture

To a kid growing up in a small town in Norway, Bukowski was definitely a voice from another reality. In many ways, his prose and poetry showed that the bums and the lowlifes - in other words; the hunted - actually had a voice, and a strong one at that... The greatness of Bukowski lies in his ability to tell extremely complex stories in a straightforward, deceptively simple language and style. The poetry is also very sharp and precise. Whatever the man did to himself with regard to drink and drugs; it never took away a smattering of his ability to observe the human predicament in all its glory - or terror, depending on whom you might ask... This 'reader' is a good place to start for anybody who would like to get acquainted with Bukowski's work. It contains poems and stories that stay on the reader's mind for a long time. The writings are also a reminder that no matter how hard a person might believe in the American dream, the dream doesn't work for everybody.

Introduction to the Study and Practice of Law in a Nutshell (Nutshell) - book cover picture

This book gave me something that I wanted to hear for a long time, it gave me encouragement. It made me realized that the first year of law school will be a difficult one, but you can get through it. It was insightful, informative and filled with great humor. I think all 1L's feel intimitated during their first year of law school. This book provided everything that the first year student should know during that first year. The humor was the refreshing part, I never knew lawyers had a sense of humor, but this author will surely make you laugh. He gave excellent advice on what to expect the first couple of weeks. This is book is great for students who are scared to death of the first year. This book wil help you realize that you are not the dumbest person in the class if you don't understand the material. I feel I can make it through the first year of law school without having a nervous breakdown.

Much Better than his Civil War Books

Book title: Gone for Soldiers

Gone for Soldiers - book cover picture

In trying to take up his father's mantle and extend the Civil War
Novel _The Killer Angels_, Jeff Shaara fails. But once he breaks free of his father's legacy his prose becomes vivid and his characterizations stop being wooden. _Gone for Soldiers_ is probably his most impressive book. The portrait of Scott, a much more impressive soldier than most people realize, is refreshing and right on the money. This book is worth your coin. And there is the added benefit that you will get an introduction to the United States' first imperialist war.
