Passionate and Tear-Jerking

The Robe - book cover picture

I found The Robe to be the most wonderful book about not only the life of Christ, but the surrounding people and how His miracles changed them. Marcellus is a young Tribune who runs across the story of Jesus, and meets several people who have been affected by His life. Marcellus searches for the truth and must soon make a life-changing decision. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to see Christ's miracles through a new perspective, or just simply what it was like to live as a Christian around 32 A.D. Wonderful insight into the past and VERY dramatic ending!

F. Scott Fitzgerald: The Great Gatsby (The Cambridge Edition of the Works of F. Scott Fitzgerald) - book cover picture

What a highly original and moving book this is, even today. Now, consider when it was initially written and what the world was like then and you can understand why it made such an impact on society. But I think it's even more relevant today as we've evidently not learned some of our lessons about greed, humanity, and fame. If anything, we've gotten worse. What would poor F.Scott think? Of all the books we've read in class recently, I have to say that Gatsby was my favorite, probably due to its length and concise writing. The list of the others we've read are all good--not a bad one in the bunch, but Gatsby was the best. My other favorite was "The Bark of the Dogwood."Our classes reading list:To Kill a Mockingbird
Of Mice and Men
The Bark of the Dogwood
Great Gatsby
Flowers for AlgernonThank you!

strange fate info!!!!

Witchlight - book cover picture

Okay, first let me say that Witchlight was really awesome. It wasn't as good as Huntress (because that plot was so great), or as The Chosen (because Quinn and Rashel were great fighters), or Daughters of Darkness (because, well.....Ash), but it was sooo worth five stars. Now here's my Strange Fate news that I'm sure you're all dying to hear: I'm writing this on 9-12-00. Two Saturdays ago, I went to the bookstore and found out that Strange Fate was published only three days before I checked. It's not on the shelves yet, but you can order it at the bookstore chain nearest you. In exactly four more days (it takes 2/3 weeks to ship), I will know who Sarah Strange's soulmate is. I will know who the fourth Wild Power is and what happens. I hope you'll know too with the help of this little note that's totally off the subject of Witchlight. So, get off your computer and run to your car! Order the book! Hurry!

Amazing

Michael Moore Is A Big Fat Stupid White Man - book cover picture

Once upon a time I liked Michael Moore. I grew up during the auto plant shut downs of the 80's, and have had friends touched by them. I was an avid fan of Roger and Me, and thought that Moore was a great crusader.

Bowling for Columbine changed that. A movie full of lies and half truths, edited video and misleading information.

If you want to know the truth about Moore, this book is an excellent choice. Anyone who gives this book a negative review is very naive, and ignorant of Moore's long twisted history. This book is pure fact, there is no embellishment at all, only the reporting of the truth. The author is FAR froom being a left wing nut, or a vindictive personality. Like it or not, the facts are the facts.

informative, insightful and well written

The Alphabetic Labyrinth: The Letters in History and Imagination - book cover picture

This book is truly a history of the alphabet. The author is very informative. She gives a good historical background and overview of written language. I especially liked Chapter VI The Kabbalah. The author writes in a clear, detailed manner as she traces the alphabet through history and the imagination. Perhaps the most difficult aspect of the book is trying to relate the way different people in different epochs have veiwed the alphabet, letters, and written language. Druker does this well. She includes many helpful examples and diagrams. Anyone interested in written language would enjoy this book.

Why She Left Us - book cover picture

Ms. Rizzuto uses four narrators and their very different perspectives to tell the story of three generations of a family. This device offers the reader varying, even conflicting, impressions of events and their impact on the characters. It also provides the reader with insight into just how enormous a "generation" gap can be. A women who appears cold in the eyes of her grandson (and at least this reader), gains the readers sympathy when she tells her own story.By not giving us a simple answer to the question in the title, Rizzuto forces the reader to consider the many reasons a mother would accept one child yet reject another. What little we learn of the circumstances surrounding her two pregnancies provides the reader a long list of Emi's possible, yet ultimately unknown motivations. By leaving us wondering, this beautifully written book, its complex characters, its question and the internment, stays with you long after the last page has been re-read.

A Wild Sheep Chase : A Novel (Contemporary Fiction, Plume) - book cover picture

I read and then returned this book to my grandmother at her door county home at her request. I searched through her library the next three times I returned trying to retrieve it. The only thing I found was a book on Wisconsin ghost stories. When I went back to find the ghost stories book "A Wild Sheep Chase" was right beside it.

weird

Weird that I tell that story, but this book is a weirdness magnet. Not sure what your take will be but I almost felt posessed at times reading this book. Murikami's delivery gives you the feeling you're reading someone's dreams with it's strange blend of detailed reality and surealism. Truely the most unique book I've ever read.

Green Eggs and Ham (I Can Read It All by Myself Beginner Books) - book cover picture

Growing up this was my favorite book not only because my name is sam and I have always been called Sam-I-Am, but because of the enjoyment I have always gotten from this book. Sam-I-Am only wanted his freind to try some green eggs and ham, but because of the way they looked he wouldn't eat them anywhere or with anything. Once he finally tried them he realized that Sam was right, they were great and he would now eat them anywhere and with anything or anyone. Dr. Seuss is a great author and I have enjoyed all of his books, but Green eggs and ham is by far my favorite one to read. I have read it to my nephew several times and he enjoys it also.
Dr. Seuss like many authors had some ups and downs with his books, but in the end has many books out there that both young and old get to enjoy and I appreciate all the work he has done.

The End of Faith: Religion, Terror, and the Future of Reason - book cover picture

If I read a biography of Michelo Angelo, I would think he was a sycopathic homosexual mal content. If I, rather look in wonder at the ceiling of the Cistine Chapel I'd know he was a genious beyond desciption. So, it is with wisdom books of all religions. To get even the most fleeting glimpse of the grandure and inexpressable-ness of creation look at it in wonder. Read the book, even with the best of intentions, the wonder disappears and is replace by some kind of insanity. So, read this book and learn to wonder again...have strength...we are not alone...have fear..."they"...all the "theys," want to destroy us with revieled beliefs. Boyd said: "If a person askes for loyalty, give them integraty. If the ask for integraty, give them loyalty. Sam Harris gives us his intergaty.

Another Winner By Janice Dickenson!

Book title: No Lifeguard on Duty: The Accidental Life of the World's First Supermodel

No Lifeguard on Duty: The Accidental Life of the World's First Supermodel - book cover picture

Okay--she was/is a great model. She is definately still beautiful. Janice is a fabulous photographer and a laugh riot! She is also one of the most entertaining authors I have ever read. She really should be more successful as a writer than anything she has done before. She is wonderful. She is smart. Sexy. Funny. Charming. The total package. I wish there were more people like her, the world would be more interesting.

I also learned from this book where many of the ideas from "America's Next Top Model" came from. Janice lived it, from the cramped quarters to the map and subway fare in foreign countries--she should be the host/cohost! It is her story!

I love you Janice! I can't wait for the next book, I have already pre-ordered it! Look forward to the diss!
