The Bleeding Heart - book cover picture

One of the best books ever written about the little "explosions" in life. The prose flows, the characters are well developed and each description of the inner emotional life of the characters just ring true. One of those books where I read it and said, "THAT is how I felt but could never describe!" Definitely worth reading especially if you are interested in Northern Ireland and the political situation there. Still worth reading even if you aren't interested in Ireland at all

Hunt for Red October - book cover picture

This was my first ever Tom Clancy book. This is certainly a good way to start with a new aythor. The decision by the Russian commander to take the Red October to the Unites States leads to a wild seaworthy adventure. You wonder until the end of the book,"will the Red October" make it. After many close calls the good guys finally win. The Russians give a worthy chase. The Jack Ryan character makes a great debut. Buy this book,it will keep you in suspense.

A genre bending tour de force

Book title: The Crook Factory

The Crook Factory - book cover picture

Focusing on an unexplored corner of Hemingway's life, Simmons combines a spy story with an historical novel which I read straight through. He creates characters we can identify with and care about at the same time that he acquaints us with a fully textured portrait of Hemingway and insights into J. Edgar Hoover and his FBI. Simmons is one of the few writers that can create a compelling story in any genre he chooses. I have read every book he has written. Crook Factory is of the same caliber as the others I put at the top of his work: Phases of Gravity, Hyperion, Summer of Night, and Children of the Night. FBI agent Joe Lucas, the story telling main character, is someone I want to know more about. Cameo appearances by Ian Fleming, Gary Cooper, Ingrid Bergmann and Marlene Dietrich set just the right atmosphere for a stylish spy story. And the action scenes are riveting. I highly recommend this book.

Out Loud Funny

Book title: Wilt

Wilt - book cover picture

This is Sharp's best novel yet, the second detailing the life of Wilt a college lecturer and his severely disfunctional family. In what is basically a farce Sharpe's satire bites deep into every subject he touches, as Wilt comes under investigation by the police for drug dealing, infiltrates a US nuclear air base and has to use face cream to cool his burning uncontrolable penis. If my description of this novel sounds manic, the reason is simple, the book is manic. As an Englishman living in the US I am not sure if the humor travels well, but I hope my American friends can appreciate it, because this book is one of only three (all written by Tom) capable of making me laugh out loud wherever I am reading it (which can be most embarrasing). Try it and enjoy a different view of life and then be thankful you don't have to live Wilt's life.

A Beautiful Book

When Zachary Beaver Came to Town - book cover picture

I was quite taken in by this book for many reasons. But I know what the main one was. Without a doubt, this book has one of the clearest settings I have ever encountered. By the end of the first chapter, Antler, Texas is a town alive and throbbing with real characters and the sticky heat of the summer of 1971. All the characters come into focus, but none more so than Toby, the narrator. Perhaps no tale is more told in literature than the "coming-of-age" standard, but Holt pulls Toby's summer off with grace, humor, pathos, and honesty. Is this a children's book? Yea, and a darn fine one at that. But it's also more. It's about wars and mothers and dreams and tiny towns and big boys. Do not miss this place and this book!

Secrets of Successful Speakers: How You Can Motivate, Captivate, and Persuade - book cover picture

This is certainly one of the best books on public speaking I've read. The only other work that deserves special mention is Jack Valenti's Speak Up with Confidence. Walters gives surefire tips and techniques that are recipe for a successful presentation that may inspire for years. Her crisp advice on the main requirements of a speech of "passion and compassion with a purpose" is very potent and often leaps off my mind each time I prepare to instruct or make a speech. Walters has carefully drawn from the "secrets" of public speaking pros and concocted them into a surefire formula for success. What's more, her anectdotes and quotes are both entertaining and memorable. I found myself a better speaker even after reading and applying steps 1 and 2. Wait till I conquer step 11! Thank you Lilly Walters for an absolutely inspiring and terrific book.

Crocodile on the Sandbank - book cover picture

What an enjoyable book this has been! Victorian Egyptology mysteries do not normally crowd my bookshelves. But I shall certainly have to remedy that. I was quite impressed with Elizabeth Peters ability to toss in some of her vast knowledge in the field of Egyptology without showing off in the process. But most of all, I enjoyed the fact that the story was not only an exciting mystery, but the characters were as developed and intricately woven as the plot. From good humored and strong willed Amelia and the lovely and ever loyal Evelyn, to Emerson, who could scrub kitchen pots with his demeanor. In short, there was not one boring spot in the whole of the book, and I highly recomend it to anyone with an adventurous spirit.

Genius without comparison

Dune (Dune Chronicles (Econo-Clad Hardcover)) - book cover picture

Frank Herbert has done what so many sci fi authors fail to do--created a plausible suggestion of the distant future of mankind, without all the lengthy descriptions of dumb gadgets that litter most sci fi novels. Bravo! It doesn't get much better than this folks. Even the most staunch hater of the sci fi genre would enjoy it. The only way the characters might not be totally realistic is that they are all highly intelligent (and that's not a complaint!) They are unique and intreguing, and the ending to this and the others in the series are far from predictable. I've never completed a series of books (six in all) so quickly. And at the end you'd just kill to be able to become a Bene Gesserit! Happy reading!

A moving tale about a man and his elegant canine bestfriend

Ella in Europe : An American Dog's International Adventures - book cover picture

This book is more than a beautiful tale about a charming man and his elegant canine bestfriend, Ella, and their adventure together in the most exciting places in Europe. This would have been reason enough to be completely satisfied with this book, however, it is also moving story about an extraordinary friendship and loyalty. The loyalty Ella has to her master is endearing but what is more moving to me is the author's loyalty to his bestfriend. I laughed. I was fascinated. I was deeply moved. I highly recommend this book not only to dog lovers but also to those who are a fan of friendship, loyalty, beauty and life.

The Giver (Newbery Medal Book) - book cover picture

This is an amazing story of a world in "sameness". Jonas thinks about why and how things work, and tries to understand it all. They way that Jonas slowly discovers things that we normally take for granted, i.e.: color, hills/valleys, sunlight, and smell, its all very thrilling and exciting. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good adventure, or to someone who likes to read about heroes. Jonas definitely has an act of heroism.
