Dry : A Memoir - book cover picture

This book was simply fabulous. A follow-up to his Running With Scissors, I found it just as riveting. This is one of the few books I had trouble putting down. His vivid and contemporary writing style kept my interest up throughout the whole book. Burroughs is tragically funny. His language flows smoothly, quickly and is often times profound. It reads like a fiction story, not some nonfiction stilted tell-all. It's beautifully written. I don't know if you have to be an alcoholic or drug addict to appreciate this book, but I'm not and I did.

Kit's Wilderness - book cover picture

Kit finds Askew and finds out about the name called death.Silky the ghost was complicated to find out who it was. I came to the conclusion that it was kit when he was younger and died when working in the cole mines. It was strange the way it had three scenes of which was not true(Winter,Autumn and Spring) atually showing the times of it getting bad and then getting good, i thought that was a great idea. I found this book very complicated beacause of Kit's dreams coming and going and Grandpa being dead or not. It was difficult to understand but it was a brillant story line. I enjoyed it very much and hope to read and enjoy his other book such as 'Skellig'!

I have to admit that this is my favorite Nicholson Baker book by far. It is positively obscene, so if that bugs you then skip this review and forget about reading the book.To everyone else: this is one of the funniest, weirdest and most endearing books I have ever read. It doesn't have a lot in the way of plot, but the theme and Baker's prose more than make up for it. As a previous reviewer mentioned, Baker has more words for the various parts of the female body than Eskimos have for snow. My favorite is "jamaicas", but I'm not telling what it means. If you like Baker's style (and I would say that this is closer in style to the Mezannine than Vox, minus the footnotes) then there's a lot to like about this book. Highly recommended.

Ishmael: An Adventure of the Mind and Spirit - book cover picture

Ishmael was a wonderful book, and while I know I will ultimately fail to convey to you the impact it had on me I will say that it is a must read. If nothing else it might help to pull your head out of the sand and make you take an honest look around you. Questions, like what are we doing here, and what is the meaning of life are now in dire need of being answered. If we don't solve this problem we are finished. Are you happy with your life? Regardless of the answer, it's unlikely you will dawn a loin cloth and go scrounging in the forest for food. But we need to take the reality expressed in this book and put it to productive use. I think the more people that read this book the better. It signifies an unmistakable and necessary shift in the general perception of our current situation. Conrad T.

Amazing and symbolic - I loved this book

Life of Pi - book cover picture

I read between 50 and 80 books a year and it is the rare novel that does not disappoint me on some level. This book never let me down, I was never bored and I never felt the author cheated or left loose ends. The language was simple and lyrical but full of symbolism and symmetry. I loved the main character's honesty and optimism and his simple will to survive. Above all I loved the choice of an alternate ending, neither story is a perfect fit leaving the reader the choice to make up their own mind. I laughed, I cried and I'm recommending it to everyone I know.

An incredible book about friendship

Book title: Amos & Boris
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
Amos & Boris - book cover picture

This book is so charming and original and to top it off it is so poignant it almost brought tears to my eyes. The language is lyrical and the story is whimsical yet it explores issues such as lifelong friendship and our interconnectness. The mouse, Amos, heads off to sea and is so overwhelmed by its beauty and the feeling of oneness with creation that he rolls right off his boat and has to be saved by a friendly whale, Boris. Amos hopes he can repay his friend someday although it is hard to imagine how a little mouse could help a big powerful whale. Sure enough Amos will get his moment! This book is great for a range of ages and will delight both parents and children.

The Sun and the Moon - book cover picture

While the beginning of the book left me wondering if I should continue (it could have been the mood I was in upon starting this novel), I stuck with it and was not disappointed! I was struck by the strong characters within the story -- I loved both Hugh and Phillipa, and rooted them on as I moved from chapter to chapter.Despite Hugh's stubbornness, I found him endearing and likable. I thoroughly enjoyed being able to venture into his thoughts about Phillipa, as well as her thoughts about him. I found them both strong, enjoyable characters.I encourage anyone who enjoys adventure, spying, and romance to read this book. You will not be disappointed.

Five Years to Freedom : The True Story of a Vietnam POW - book cover picture

I read this book a long time ago when I was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone with my husband in the military (1970-1973). Together, he and I and a few others fought for recognition within the Canal Zone for the POW's of Vietnam. We finally gained that recognition through Gov. Parker. We took the donations for the bracelets (mine wore out) but the story never did. I can only compare Maj. Rowe's experiences with the movie "The Killing Fields" - it's an honest account, accurate, horrific and it took great courage to tell it.It saddens me that I didn't learn of his death until tonight - (7/7/2000) but it doesn't surprise me. He was courageous enough to escape from Vietnam - he told the story like it was - and he'd still be alive today if it wasn't the truth.

This book focuses on Regeane, a misunderstood and orphaned noblewoman, mistreated by her relatives, who happens to be a werewolf. She has fought the wolf part of herself and has not really come into her power. She is a pawn in a huge powerplay which could effect the entire Empire or at least what's left of it. She meets Maeniel from Night of the Wolf. In human form, neither knows at first that the other is a wolf. The book goes from there and sees justice for Regeane as well as happiness.

Loose Balls : Easy Money, Hard Fouls, Cheap Laughs & True Love in the NBA - book cover picture

Coming from someone who knows Jayson very well, this book is all he said it was going to be! I've heard these stories a thousand times....and each time they get better! I didn't think I would react the same way to the stories beacuse his delivery is so unique, but I was wrong. I laughed just as hard as I did when I heard them the first time. I did worry a bit because I knew I was going to be in the book, but I even had to laugh at myself. This book is a must-read for sports fans of all kinds!
