Mallory moves forward
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
I found this book to be at least as powerful as O'Connell's other novels (including _Judas Child_, which I thought was absolutely amazing). Mallory actually grows, instead of being just a strange, crippled creature for the plot to bounce off of; whether or not her growth is worth what it cost her remains to be seen. The compassion with which O'Connell describes pain and human tragedy makes reading about the events all the more harrowing and unforgettable. Easily the best book I've read this year.

I have literally given this book to at least a dozen people over the years. It is a profound instructional manual and guide to the beyond and to the here and now. Rabbi Steinsaltz is a unique thinker and a wonderful spirit for all of us, especially Jews, who often wonder: What are the underlying profound beliefs of my people. Too often,we cannot find these beliefs in the synagogue, but Rabbi Steinsaltz is more than a teacher, he is a direct path to profundity and hope.

The power of determination.
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
The power of determination rings clear as Nell defies her elder sisters' and mother's low expectations of how much she is capable. Nell wants to help, to be involved, to be part of things. But her mama and sisters think she can't help because she's too small. So Nell retreats to the woods where her comforting friendships with Reindeer, Hare, and Bear Cub give her the support to do what she aspires to: those things she has been told she can't because she is "too small." The animal friends want to learn to build a snowman and Nell tells them how. However, she can't do it without their help so as a winning team, they build the Biggest, Best Snowman. Not only does Nell realize her potential, but her family realizes too and is suitably apologetic, except for the ornery sister who remains unwilling to acknowledge that Nell is, indeed, Big Enough. This story is an important reminder for parents how great an impact our words have on small lives.

Monkey Island
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
My daughter read this book and recommended it to me. I thought that a book with a title like "Monkey Island" was probably a bit of fluff and couldn't be very good. Was I ever wrong! The story centers on eleven-year-old Clay and describes his views and thoughts, which are very believable, as he becomes abandoned, homeless, cold and hungry. The story doesn't turn away from the harshness of Clay's reality, but merely accepts it, as does Clay himself. I was very moved and uplifted by the story. Paula Fox has an incredible gift and uses it well throughout this book. Her descriptions of common occurrences are pure poetry. You can bet that I will read her other books!

Amazing
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
This book delves deep into the psyche of the Balkan mind, weaving fact and fiction together in a masterful way. The bridge is still there (the one that was destroyed was in Mostar) and completely magnificent. It is amazing to have walked the bridge and to have sat upon the stone benches built into the infamous parapeet after reading this book. The author described the bridge so well that when I finally walked upon it and ran my hands over the stones it was like I'd been there hundreds of times already instead of just the first time. The author's insight into the culture and delicate intermingling of folklore is quite poignant is a must read for anyone wanting to learn more of the Balkans, specifically Bosnia.

Harry Potter - guilty (?) pleasure for adults too!
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
I am a 36-year-old male who reads almost everything I can get my hands on... I found myself curious what all the fuss was about with Harry Potter, so I risked the embarassment and bought this book. All I can say is: Wow! I wish these books existed when I was a kid! The comparisons to Roald Dahl's Charlie (and the Chocolate Factory) are apt, but this book may be even better. I read it cover-to-cover in less than a day, and had trouble putting it down. So even if you're an adult, buy this book for yourself and not just for your kids!

Wonderful!
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Mass Market Paperback
I have read all of Feist's books MANY times and this series is easily one of my favorites. After reading the Riftwar Saga series it was great to read these books to get a look at life on the other side of the Rift. The Tsurani culture is rife with politcal intrigue and bloody deeds and there is never a dull moment. The story's heroine, Lady Mara, is a refreshing switch from the usual and we see her grow from a shy unsure young girl to a strong intelligent player of the Great Game. The book will have you turning pages to see where the next asassins blade will come from and what ingeneous plan Mara will come up with to save the Acoma from obliteration. The entire series is worth reading again and again.
