Reflections from the North Country - book cover picture

I first learned about Olson from a canoe instructer. On overnight camping trips he would often read a passage from Sigurd Olson to get us to reflect on the beauty of nature around us. Olson's work has a charisma that can not be found by any other writer. Reflections of The North Country was the first of Olson's books that I have had the privledge to read. I read the hardcover version, and found it to be food for the soal. In the hectic modern world that we live in today it is wonderful to learn from the wisdom of the ages, and get back to nature. Reflections is a compilation of beautifully writtin essays written by the late Sigurd Olson as he neared the end of his life. He looks back on the bygone era, and lure of the old French Canadian Voyageur, and describes many of his own voyages by canoe. I would recommend this book and others by Olson to anyone who loves the outdoors.

When the Poor Boys Dance - book cover picture

An astonishing view of inept leadership at all levels, and uncommon courage at one. While I served proudly in Vietnam with the U.S. Marines, and spent another 20 years in the Guards it would be a mistake to view Mr.Borden's work as a treatise on military virtue alone.
The courage, honor, discipline as well as the fear od L/Cpl Roth is identical to the courage, honor, discipline and fear which is so much a part of people's day to day lives.
In the lives of parents in crime and drug ridden neighborhoods, in the lives of families who try to care for their terminally ill loved ones, and essentially anyone who faces tremendous odds seemingly alone and forgotten.
Mr. Borden masterfully deals with the all to often cause of all this misery " inept leadership ".
For anyone who presently follows, but one day hopes to lead, this book should be your bibl

Step in the ring with Gardner and experience the talent of a literary heavyweight. Gardern's writng packs a punch, it is lean, mean and powerful. The characters are desperate men seeking validation and redemption, yet Gardner resists the temptation to pander to our weaker emotions for you feel not pity for these battered souls, but respect. Fat City is Gardners only novel- that is our loss. Read this book and witness a work of true beauty. Fat City is a winner.

Shoeless Joe - book cover picture

I read this book in a few days over the summer for a class I was taking. Out of the seven other books we read in five weeks this one really stands out in my mind. I am not a fan of baseball either I don't watch or play it, but I was able to follow and understand this book completely. The story line was very different and effective. It is more about a son looking for closure with his father than baseball. Ray's experience in the novel takes on an almost religious quaility. Every time I think about this novel I feel good and want to read it over.

Losing the Race: Self-Sabotage in Black America - book cover picture

Why does your house review say that this book is full of "tired anti-affirmative-action, right-wing clich?s"? Is it "right-wing" to be concerned about peer pressure among young black men that tells them to ignore academic achievement so they can be "authentic"? Remember that affirmative action was started in the Nixon administration to fully open opportunities for academic and occupational advancement for African-Americans who were just beginning to fully enjoy their civil rights under the 1965 legislation. It has become an excuse for elite whites to ignore the educational needs of black children and then promote them to academic levels that they have not been adequately prepared for.

Magical, mellifluous and memorable.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe - book cover picture

The "Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe" is the reason I became a passionate reader. It was the first book to capture me completely, to revisit my mind again and again. C.S. Lewis speaks to us so simply and so beautifully, it seems his young imagination never grew up...never complicated the simple truths of life and nature. The main characters of this book; Edmund, Lucy, Peter and Susan, still reside vividly in my imagination. And Aslan is bright and golden, the way I imagined him when I first read this book - more than 20 years ago. Share this book with a child you know. Better yet, read it to them.

2150 A D - book cover picture

2150 A.D. was given to me by a Metaphysical Bookstore owner over 20 years ago. It was a great turning point in my life. After reading this book, I felt a profound confirmation of everything I had come to believe. While not the best written piece of work, Thea Alexander has brought us a world of hope and beauty, pain and ultimate freedom from life's many fears. I would recommend this book to anyone over the age of 15. Teenagers will benifit from the positive role models in the future world of 2150 A.D. and find hope in it's eventual outcome. I have given away at least 50 copies of this book over the years and have always had positive feedback about it. Enjoy this futuristic world!

The Manchurian Candidate - book cover picture

This is a thrilling novel, especially relevant in the context of today's world politics. Fans of the original film will be impressed with how marvelously it was adapted from this complex and well written novel.I can't imagine why they're remaking the movie in an updated version with Denzel Washington and Meryl Streep, but hopefully they will exexcute it with the same class and poignancy as the first.A great read for people interested in the politics of the 20th Century and today.

Entering the Circle: Ancient Secrets of Siberian Wisdom Discovered by a Russian Psychiatrist - book cover picture

I am a serious searcher of truth. I could not put Ms. Kharitidi's book down. Now, I will be looking everywhere for books on Siberian Mysticism. What makes this so believable is the fact that she wrote this inside a very repressed Country. Her story came from her heart!!Belovodia has similarities to the fabled lands of Lemuria and Atlantis. I hope she writes a sequel. I would love to hear more about the Twin Spirit and about the Mummies connections to Belovodia etc. She has a message that is worth so much.

Loser - book cover picture

The book Loser by Jerry Spinelli Is about a boy named Zinkoff who is growing up. He attends school at Saterfield Elementary where he goes from k-6 grade. I think Loser is a very good book. I think that because Zinkoff does so many things in the book that are funny and does things that are not funny but serious.Like when Zinkoff tried to save his neighbor Claudia when she got lost in a snow storm.
Something funny that Zinkoff did was when he was trying to find a best friend and he just randomly pick a best friend, his name was Hector Binns, Hector was collecting ear wax and was going to make a candle with it when he had enough ear wax. So if you like funny books then I urge you to read LOSER!! It is a great book and it's very funny. When you start to read this book you will not want to put it down!!
