The Good, the Bad, and the Undead - book cover picture

Kim Harrison's after the "Turn" world is great. Very imaginative and creative with her explanation of how weres, vamps, pixies, and witches were brought into society. Makes you almost afraid of tomatoes.

Story line is full of suspense, anticipation, action, and keeps you reading till the end. Rachel's misfortunes keep you on the edge of your seat rooting for her to come out on top.

This is a clean read not cluttered with unneeded erotica you find in so many vampire/witch books today. I especially loved Jenks. I am curious to see where Rachel and Trent will go from here. Cannot wait to start the third book.

From an editors standpoint, would suggest having an editor review for grammatical mistakes.

Surely You're Joking, Mr Feynman!: Adventures of a Curious Character - book cover picture

I'm a 16 year old kid, into the whole physics/math scene. When I first picked up the book, I found myself gripped. I let nothing interrupt my reading time. And while reading, I always sat on the edge of my chair. Never did I read in bed or reclined on a La-Z-boy. Now that's gotta tell you something! When finished, a sudden passion overcame me. I had to be like Feynman! I whipped out all my physics books and began working through the problem sets like a madman. Looking for a page-turner? Look no more. This is an absolute must for any science loving nerd.

The Devil's Dictionary - book cover picture

A veteran of the 1861-65 U.S. Civil War who mysteriously disappeared during the 1910-20 Mexican Civil War, the caustically irreverent Bierce was the H. L. Mencken of the 19th century (or Mencken was the Bierce of the 20th century). His timeless and ego-deflating observations of Homo Sapiens reminds us that today's 21st century politics and pop culture were well-known to this 1842-born iconoclast. For instance, he defined a conservative as, "A statesman who is enamored of existing evils, as distinguished from the Liberal, who wishes to replace them with others" (1993 p.18). He defined a homeopathist as "The humorist of the medical profession" (p.51). He defined a clairvoyant as "A person, commonly a woman, who has the power of seeing that which is invisible to her patron-- namely, that he is a blockhead (p.16). The expositions on everything from men and women to ghouls are too long to quote here but are also incisively amusing.

With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa - book cover picture

I too had to read this book for a WWII class in college. All I have to say is that this is one of the best books I have ever read. Sledge is simple, honest and sincere in telling his story about the adventures, the horrors, and the triumphs of the war in the Pacific. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in an account of the War through the eyes of an enlisted mortar man in the Pacific. In a word: unforgettable!

Counting Coup : A True Story of Basketball and Honor on the Little Big Horn - book cover picture

No political correctness here, no trumpeting idealism, no hard-breathing expose of the flaws of the reservation Indians or the whites who live around and among them. Larry Colton gives us only reality, a reality that condemns racism on both sides but shows the hurdles that the residents of Hardin put in front of themselves. His real-life characters don't do what any of his readers might expect them to do or want them to do; they do what they do. In Sharon and her girls basketball team's quest for the Montana state title, Larry Colton finds and reports all the elements of high drama: tragedy, betrayal, passion, defeat and hope. And, he finds them in a world and a people unknown to almost all of us. You'll hang onto your seat waiting for the outcome of the basketball games, but far more you'll hang on waiting to see how the members of his cast succeed or fail in their lives.

Wonderful books, and the order was favored by Lewis himself

The Chronicles of Narnia Set - book cover picture

Yes, I grew up reading these books when the series still began with the exquiste "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe," and I still love the original ordering.

However, there is a strong consensus in the publishing industry that the chronological order is what Lewis himself preferred and that this order has merits all its own. In 1957 Lewis wrote a letter to an American boy in which he wrote, "I think I agree with your order [i.e., chronological] for reading the books more than with your mother's. The series was not planned beforehand as she thinks."

Give this order a chance and you may find yourself delighted and surprised. These books are so beautiful it would be difficult for them to be ruined by any choice of sequencing. Lewis was, after all, a reader of medieval literature, in which chronological order was the accepted fashion for structuring a narrative. He seemed to find the variation found within that structure endlessly amazing.

Good to Great to the Best

Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap... and Others Don't - book cover picture

This book asserts the value of the right people -- rather than just people -- as the greatest asset of a company. Good to Great is a book that explores the leap from mediocre thinking to extraordinarily positive thinking within a company. But have you stopped to think that "great" may not be the best possible standard. Are you settling for second best? In today's competitive corporate world, companies must strive to be their greatest, their best. I recommend Optimal Thinking: How to Be Your Best Self by Rosalene Glickman, Ph.D. as the essential resource to optimize the thinking and performance of individuals and corporations. We can't achieve peak performance when we think suboptimally. Leading companies employ Optimal Thinking to optimize thinking, productivity, morale and profitability.

Intelligent analysis of ethnic polarization in America

Book title: The Disuniting of America: Reflections on a Multicultural Society
Rating: 5/5

The Disuniting of America: Reflections on a Multicultural Society - book cover picture

This highly readable book analyzes the drift in American culture. Originally America was a "melting pot" where each immigrant ethnic wave valued subverted their cultural values to become emersed in the language, politics and culture of the US. The current environment tends to value ethnic differences. The survival of America, which has sustained frequent waves of immigrants, is challenged by the polarization into ethnic enclaves. Many other countries not unified have suffered chaotic internal conflicts such as the Balkans, Spain, Zaire, etc. He analyzes the effects of language, history, and cultural values on the stability of America.

Although the author's posture is not exactly politically correct, it forces the reader to examine the impact of valuing ethnic differences rather than the commonality of being "American."

Confederacy of Dunces - book cover picture

There simply aren't enough stars in the heavens for this great book. Laugh out loud funny with a dark underlying and warped underbelly, this rollicking and twisted tale is now a southern classic. The main character of Ignatius has got to be the funniest and most disturbed individual ever to grace the written page. Why this book wasn't made into a movie long ago is beyond me. Would also recommend another great book, similar to this one in its scope, humor, and insight: Bark of the Dogwood by Jackson McCrae.
