J.R.R. Tolkien Boxed Set (The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings) - book cover picture

I decided to purchase and read the boxed set of Lord of The Rings after seeing the first movie. My brother had picked up the DVD and I watched it one day. After finishing it I decided I couldn't wait for the next movie release and purchased the box set. I read all 4 books including the first of which I had already seen the movie. The main experience I took from reading the books was that they were more enjoyable then the movies. The movies were very impressive but the detail that is given in the books is unmatched. I would recommend this set for anyone who has or has not seen the movies, and to all readers as it is a great read.

J.R.R. Tolkien Boxed Set (The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings) - book cover picture

J.R.R.Tolkiens"Lord of the Rings"is the greatest fantasy novel to date in print that I have read.Nowhere else have I found a story with not just a great plot but with true humanity in its characters,as well as an eye for details that makes you feel as if you are standing in the characters shoes. It takes time to read, but once it is finished, you may find yourself there and back again and again. All of the other fantasy authors(Brooks,Jordan, etc.)pale when compared to this epic of the little guy vs.evil.I hope you enjoy it.

Wonderful flower designs from the past!

Book title: Floral Crochet (Dover Needlework Series)

Floral Crochet (Dover Needlework Series) - book cover picture

Floral Crochet is a Dover Publications reprint of floral thread designs from the 1940's and 1950's. The introductions states that this book is a compilation of some of the best floral patterns from this period. All of the designs are thread. Designs include bedspreads, table cloths, doilies, edgings, vanity sets, placemats, and pillows. I would not recommend the book to someone new to crocheting with thread. It's a shame this book does not have color photographs it would be a feast for the eyes! The vanity sets were particularly interesting as I have not seen many patterns for them. There is also instructions for a doily done in a technique called Crocheted Tatting which is very unusual. There are some designs using a crocheted cutwork technique and several doilies with fabric centers. This is a wonderful book to make some special treasures for your home.

I owe a great deal to Anne Lamott

Bird by Bird : Some Instructions on Writing and Life - book cover picture

When I set out to write my first book, it felt overwhelming... Anne's take on writing, (BIRD BY BIRD) and her take on saying the first draft always belongs in the toilet -was a great encouragement to me. It was also a great encouragement to me, to see by her writing, that although she has faith, she isn't stuffy, or formal. I'd always thought when books mentioned faith, they immediatly became boring. Anne opened my eyes, to the world of a real person, with a REAL faith, and she gave me hope that writing about what I know, could be writing that would sell.I would have to say this book was pivital to getting me started in publishing. And although I've never met Anne Lamott, or talked to her on the phone, or even met anyone who knows her personally (just so you don't think this is a family puff) I have to say here, Anne's other books, OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS, and TRAVELING MERCIES are also wonderful.Marsha Marks

My super super review

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Book 4) - book cover picture

This was by far the best book i have ever read. I have all the Harry Potter books, read them all more than once, and this one was still the best of the 4. It was full of suspense that made me keep on reading even though i said i would stop. I actually give this book 10 stars, not 5. I would recommend this book to anyone of any age. This book will leave you counting the days until the 5th book comes out in 2002! Enjoy!

Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight : An African Childhood - book cover picture

What a pleasure it is to start off the new year with a wonderful new book. I probably never would have picked this book up, except for the glowing reviews it's been getting. And, are they ever deserved. This is the story of Bobo Fuller, daughter of gone-to-the-dogs parents in 1970's Rhodesia, on the losing (depending on your point of view) side of a civil war. Covering her growing-up years of moving from one place to another in Africa always searching for a way to exist in a place where white Africans no longer had power and privilege, Ms. Fuller writes unsparingly, unsentimentally, and honestly about her family and their remarkable experiences. Don't miss this terrific book.

This book fills in the gaps yet still leaves you curious.

Belgarath the Sorcerer - book cover picture

This book begins, literally, at the beginning of Belgarath's life. It goes through each of the major points that you've been curious about since reading the Belgariad and the Mallorean, including the Battle of Vo Mimbre and other high and low points of history. It also tells in hilarious detail the events leading up to these events. The funniest parts occur when Belgarath, in his role as narrator, turns aside from the story to comment directly to his reader. Somehow, the Eddingses manage to fill in lots of gaps, satisfying our need to know about Belgarath's life, and create more gaps for Polgara, Belgarath's daughter, to fill in. All in all, this is a wonderful book, but it is not for the person who hasn't read both the Belgariad and the Mallorean

Ticklemonster and Me - book cover picture

We've had this book from the library for almost a month now, and I'm pretty sure we've read it EVERY night. Our youngest daughter wouldn't think of going to bed now until she'd been tickled. (Even our 10 and 11 year old daughters will come in just to get in on the tickle action!) She likes to trade places in the story, and some nights she's the ticklemonster and I'm Tough Teddy. It really is like a little play they put on while they're listening to the book. We will be giving this book to her for Christmas, sentencing ourselves to what will probably be months of reading the same book over and over....oh to be 3 again!

French With Michel Thomas: The Fastest Way to Learn a Language (Deluxe Language Courses with Michel Thomas) - book cover picture

I purchased this CD set three months before I was about to depart for France to live for 1-1/2 years in a city where anglophones were a rarity, and having never taken a Frecnh course before in my life. I was looking for a basic grounding in the French language, and I absolutely got it.It is a fantastic benefit to be able to hear the language being spoken, as opposed to just reading it from a book. And it couldn't be easier! You simply sit and listen, and pronounce aloud with the students in the CDs. When I arrived in Paris, I had little trouble in meeting my basic needs in traveling to my destination city, and I attribute that entirely to this language course.

Hardy's Feel-Good Novel

Book title: Far from the Madding Crowd
Rating: 5/5

Far from the Madding Crowd - book cover picture

This is a fantastic introduction to Hardy's work for those who have not yet plunged into his more serious (and tragic) novels -- it's the only Hardy I've read thus far that actually has a happy ending. In Far From the Madding Crowd, Hardy creates two of his most pure characters: Gabriel Oak and Sergeant Francis Troy. Oak is a shepherd with a good heart and impeccable morals, someone to be counted on in all cases great or small, and someone who will always give an honest account of a particular situation. Troy, on the other hand, is seductive and deceptive to the last -- the perfect villian. It is interesting that Oak and Troy never deviate from their pureness of character, and they are a delight to "watch" as the novel progresses. Although I think Jude the Obscure and Return of the Native were structurally superior works, I cannot rate this work as less than "excellent" because it has that certain Wessex charm from which I can't seem to break away.
