My Side of the Mountain - book cover picture

Sam Gribley was sick of living in a cramped apartment with his eight brothers and sisters in New York City. One day he decided he was going to go to the Catskill Mountains to find his grandfater's land. When he found the property he built a house by burning out the inside of a tree. He caught a falcon and named it Frightful. Over time he trained the bird to hunt and made friends with some of the hikers. One of the hikers, whicch Sam called Bando, was a college professor and took a liking to Sam. Him and Sam became good friends and Bando came back to visit on all of his vacations. Sam made it through the tough winter in the Catskill Mountains, but with all of the hikers wandering around would Sam soon be found and put all over the news?

To the Lighthouse - book cover picture

the internet being mostly ephemeral as opposed to the medium of published novels this review is extemporaneous and lacking. There is a paragraph in "To the Lighthouse" which describes the lord of the manor more clearly than a camera. This paragraph is one sentence long though not one long sentence. The thought, care, sweat and anguish which must have gone into the complete thrill of brushing the character onto paper is mortar and brick to the sentence. It stands as does Virginia Woolf.

Talking It over - book cover picture

Julian Barnes is an absolute master when it comes to examiningthe psychy of intimate relationships. "Talking It Over" isthe best book that i've read ever. Barnes is not only an original writer, he comes up with amazing and unique ideas (like in "The History Of The World In 10 and a half Chapters"). The book deserves to win loads of awards and accalade as well as Barnes!! If you've not read it then DO because it is funny, clever, sad, endearing, sexy, frustrating and... well just down right brilliant!!!!

This is a great book - one of the best works I've read coming from Patterson. The pace is classic Patterson. Fast, though not as furious as his Alex Cross novels. Now, the idea of a bird-girl was a bit unreal at first and it took a while for Patterson to get to the DNA part. Once I read about the genetic research involved, it made more sense and Max becomes believable. Frannie's first-person narrations were a bit out of sync with the rest of the book though - Patterson could have written the entire novel in third-person and it'd be less disjointed. Overall, a very good read. It's more science fiction than mainstream. I enjoyed it. It'll make a great stocking stuffer this Christmas.

The House of Gentle Men - book cover picture

Several days have passed since I finished reading this amazing novel, and I still find myself thinking of passages and lines, until I have to pick up the book and reread them again. That's what Kathy Hepinstall's novel does -- it works its way into your heart and mind and just doesn't let go. Her deft handling of atmosphere leaves the reader feeling as though she were part of the book. The characters become friends making me want to hold some of them, shake others, and weep for all of them. The themes are timeless and universal, but hardly nowhere more moving than seen through the eyes of these characters. I echo what someone else said here -- this is a book that deserves the attention Oprah's Book Club would give it. I can think of none better.

The greatest?

The Time Machine (Classic, 20th-Century, Audio) - book cover picture

Awesome book. Yeah, it was recently made into a movie, which was pretty good too. The book is much more straightforward, has (obviously) been around longer, and puts forth some of Wells' opinions and some good science of its day. Particularly striking is the central issue of the split between upper and working classes of people. While Wells' futuristic rendering of this rift may seem fantastic now, it does have the ring of ominous prophecy to it. Considering he wasn't too far off the mark about the future of communism in his fore-seeing War of the Worlds, readers may do well to take note of the message here.
There's a reason why Wells is possibly the greatest science fiction writer of all time. This read is evidence clear; and it'll only take you an afternoon.

To Kill a Mockingbird - book cover picture

This book is so well written that I feel like I want to memorize at least half of the 250+ pages.Atticus seems to be perfect to be true yet probably everyone knows a few Atticus -- men/women who are normal but great. I know a few and realized after reading this book that they're such treasured friends. As a parent, Atticus is a great model of parents who are trying to raise independent, righteous, brave...childen. I'm going to send this book to my best girlfriend who is about to deliver a baby.I seldom finish up a novel and almost never collect books. But this book will be with me until I can memorize it.

Damage - book cover picture

I loved this slim novel of sexual obsession, but beyond obsession, 'Damage' is also the story of a man's reawakening to life; even if that reawakening destroys him and the lives of his family. I saw the Louis Malle film adaptation before I read the novel and thought that it was absurd, but when I picked up the novel, I was stunned by the sheer erotic charge of it. I'm extremely impressed that the author is a woman, and that she seems so tuned into this middle-aged man's belated passion (and his desperate need for it.) This is a fine novel that is beautifully written without an ounce of literary fat.

A Must-Read

Daughter of the Forest (The Sevenwaters Trilogy) - book cover picture

My uncle (a librarian) gave me this book for my birthday because it received admirable reveiews from Anne McCaffrey, my favorite author, and I cannot be more pleased. I must have read it in almost a single setting - the tragic tail of Sorcha, a young girl who undergoes a horrible and painful test of strength and courage to break the spell her evil stepmother places on her 6 brothers. During her ordeal, she is forbidden to make a sound. So engrossed and enthralled was I with this book, that when interrupted, it took me a moment to realize that I was allowed to speak myself. Marillier's writing allowed me to identify with the character and brought me to both laughter and tears; I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good novel - and strongly suggest that all fantasy fans make room for a new author on their shelves.

Cooking for Two : 120 Recipes for Every Day and Those Special Nights - book cover picture

I appreciated how the book offered recipes with the perfect portion sizes. The authors understand that when cooking for company, there is no need for leftovers. Who wants to eat the leftovers for the remainder of the week? Its also good for singles. There's just enough for dinner and a portion to take to lunch. The authors also offer a variety of dishes and gives an expected cooking time (quick meal, all day meal)for each recipe, as well as several replacement items for the basic staples. Now, if I could only find a book 'Cooking For One', I'd be in heaven.
