Life of Pi - book cover picture

Simply brilliant. There are so many levels to this novel I know I have yet to scratch the surface. One one level, it is simply a remakable story about a boy stranded on a boat with a tiger. It is interesting and engaging on that level. However, we are forced to ask ourselves: is what we think we know what really happened? (For that matter, do we ever know what really happened?)

A novel about story telling, perception and reality, spirituality, loss, coming of age, good and evil, religion and the forces of our natural world. Let me know when you figure out the island.

This work is destined to be taught in classrooms some day. I was sorry when it was over.

A Moveable Feast (Scribner Classic) - book cover picture

My God, if you're a writer or hoping to be -- you will love this book! These are sketches of Hemingway's early days in Paris as he joined other expatriate writers and artists living there. Need I say more? How about that he recalls meeting the likes of Ezra Pound, Getrude Stein, Scott Fitzgerald, and that the writing is quite beautifully understated and so easy to read. This book was suggested to me in the back of another terrific book called THE LOSERS' CLUB: Complete Restored Edition -- also about artist and writers but set in pre-9/11 downtown New York City. Anyway, pick up A MOVEABLE FEAST and THE LOSERS CLUB -- both books will stroke your fantasies of being a creative person. Both books are also intensely entertaining and compulsively readable. Take my word for it you won't be disappointed.

The Day of the Jackal - book cover picture

It keep me reading and rereading for years and I always wonder whether it is true or not.Still the details are accurate and very informative. The book expose many information on how to make forged identity cards. I am also interested in the characther of the killer since he is very obsessed with perfection but at last were killed by a mediocre but patient policeman. It goes to show that however smart you are,the steady routine work by a patient man or woman can beat you.

Where the Red Fern Grows - book cover picture

I absoluteley loved WTRFG! I love it because I also love dogs, and this book has two beautiful red-bone hounds in it and then the story was easy for me to enjoy. I also loved this book because it gave me tons of great emotions. Lastly, I loved this book because he used great words and sentences. I think Wilson Rawls used imagery the best. I think this because when he described something a picture popped up in my head. this book made me think twice about wanting a dog, because if i got one and it died it would break my heart because i'd get so attached. I would reccomend this book, because the author gives so much in depth sentences and phrases. If you don't like this book, you basically don't like books at all.

A Staggering Impact

Starship Troopers - book cover picture

This book made a staggering impact on me, and I believe it isdefinitely one of the best works of fiction I have ever read. RAH hasingeniously woven together a moral and philisophical tale with a superb adventure story, much in the vein of "Atlas Shrugged", another favorite. This work is an absolute must read in the genre or for anyone looking to understand how a master articulates his vision in the guise of a fictional work.

The Da Vinci Code, Special Illustrated Edition - book cover picture

This book is really great. I wasn't going to read it but i figured what the heck everyone else is so i might as well see what they are talking about and it was a fun read. As for reviewer RYAN, to put down someone's writting skills is one thing and if you don't like the story that is your opinon but to say someone or their wife is a lesbian is going to far, that was one of the worst things you could say i did report it and hopefully Amazon will cancel your accound and remove the post. It really was horrbile to say. As for the other bad reviews I must say i find them pretty amusing they must be some of those tent revival church people you know the type that bite the heads of live chickens or something during the service. people it's okay to hate the book but lets not get the views of your faith involved okay?

Bob Books Fun! Level A, Set 2 - book cover picture

My 5 year old started with the "Bob" series the summer before kindergarten. By the beginning of school, he had gone through 4 out of 6 of the sets, although he still likes to go back to the eariler ones to re-read the books. He loves them and is so pleased with himself for being able to read his own books. This is a great way for young children to learn to read. I highly recommend the entire series.

A Story Like the Wind - book cover picture

A Story Like the Wind is an amazing snapshot of africa told through the eyes of francois. The story can occasionally move slowly, weighed down by the beauty of Van Der Posts descriptions, but in general, this is one of those books that you become so deeply immersed in, you never want it to end. A Story Like the Wind is better than A Far Off Place, but read both of them if you like the first one.

The human stain - book cover picture

This is a beautiful, wrenching novel; just what you'd expect of Roth. I think it also might be his most accessible work. I've reccommended it to several people who previously had shied away from Roth after works like "My Life as a Man" and "American Pastoral." The characters are so real, it seems like you could bump into them in a restaurant. And bengalgirl, the reviewer below who panned it with such spite, just look a little deeper. Sjhe gave five stars to a Star Trek book. That's right, a novel about TV characters. So, um. I guess if you're so deeply into cheesy TV sci-fi shows that you read novels with the same characters (and, no doubt, the same depth) this might not be the book for you. Maybe you'd like some Buck Rodgers books. Or Battlestar Gallactica.

Star Wars, Episode I - The Phantom Menace - book cover picture

I have to admit, I read the book the week before the movie came out. I know that a lot of people were upset that Lucasfilm did this. I'm glad that they did. I wouldn't have understood Jar Jar without reading the book first, or have been able to follow along with the plot. This book is a great read, & I've read almost all of the Star Wars novels. After reading this book (bought Obi-Wan cover), I went out & bought it on cassette. I love the 'inserted' scenes that were not in the movie; Terry Brooks gives much insight to ALL of the characters. I loved Qui-Gons insights into Anakin being the 'Chosen One'. Read this book, you won't be dissappointed.
