Hearts Aflame - book cover picture

Hearts Aflame impressed me as one of the most honest presentations of the agony and ecstacy of love ever. Kristen is so refreshing as someone who can be very capable, strong and independent without being bossy, bitchy or manly! She's able to keep her femininity and still be stong and honorable. And Royce - what can I say - he was my first crush! This book is excellent. I've loaned it to all my friends and still read it every year!

Superbly Written and Organized Story of Property's Role

Book title: Property and Freedom

Property and Freedom - book cover picture

This is the first of Richard Pipes's books that I've read. It won't be the last. Pipes shows -- with a style that is as engaging and as smooth as any that I've ever read -- that private property rights are essential to the maintenance of human dignity, human flourishing, liberty, and widespread prosperity. He does so not just with economics (although his understanding of economics is deep), but with history. And it is the history of private property rights that ultimately convinces the skeptic that such rights are indispensable for the good society. As with any great book, nits can be picked with this one. But all are minuscule. This is a remarkable and learned book.

They Cage the Animals at Night - book cover picture

I first read "They cage the animals at night" when I was about 14, and was captivated and enthralled. Burch writes with the candor and knowledge that can only cme from peril and suffering. When he was 8, in the hopeful 1950's, Jennings Micheal Burch was abandoned by his frail mother at a New York Orphanage due to problems with her health. What follows is one heck of a ride for young Jennings, who suddenly must come face to face with all the cold realities of a sometimes very-inhuman world. Bullies, thugs, sadistic punishments, crazy foster parents, the usual assortment of childhood losses and hopes and dreams, physical abuse and, finally, the driving need to love and be loved. Burch writes from his heart and the result is a captivating, magical account of one man's often-scary (but always innocent) childhood. This book is beautiful.

I found this book in a thrift store for $2, after hearing about it from an ex girlfriend. It takes a while to figure it out, but after like 2 weeks I mastered it. People who have problems understanding this, just are't trying hard enough. Anyway , I lost 20 pounds, and I'm at my ideal weight now. All this with barely working out. I have more energy throughout the day, and more importantly, a lot more confidence. There is sacrifice involved, but once you get to where I am, you really can't see living any other way. Highly recommended.

Gates of Fire - book cover picture

This is an outstanding study in leadership. Leonidas, King of Sparta, a superb leader, while Xeres, the Persian King, an inaffectual one. Leonidas, bore the harships of his men, in return all had great affection for him. He needed only to remind. Dicipline in the Startan camp was natural because of the example the valiant king set. He was at the front of the battle line, all men followed. On the other hand, poor Xeres had to use whips to send his men into the foray.Being a combat vetran myself, the bonds of comradship were developed with the tenderness and based on mutual trust and there was no question in my mind why the Spartans stayed to the end. Their leader, Leonidas would not leave.

Even the fan who knows "everything" will love this book

Last Train to Memphis : The Rise of Elvis Presley - book cover picture

The greatest book about the greatest entertainer of all-time.This book is excellent and, of course, the best Elvis biography ever. The extent of Guralnick's research makes this a must read for everyone, even the Elvis fan who knows "everything."This book is told more from the Elvis' point of view than its sequel, and is, consequently, a much better book. This book goes a long way in convincing those ignorant in the history of music that true Elvis rock-n-roll is simply a melding of Country and R&B.

Alice in Wonderland (Norton Critical Edition Ser.) - book cover picture

Most people think about "Alice in Wonderland" as being some little kid book about nonsense. Actually, Lewis Carroll was a very smart man. He invented Wonderland to show people truths in their own world most people wouldn't even bother thinking about. In fact, I think the whole point of the book is that even though Wonderland seems so unreal and full of nonsence, it's really just the same as our own world! I admit, I was curious about what a book so popular written for children would be like. It was great! I'd recomend it to anyone!

Wild collection of amazing true stories

Rascals in Paradise - book cover picture

Michener and his partner, South Pacific expert A. Grove Day, tell a wild variety of stories from the horror of the Globe Mutinity to the incredible adventures of Coxinga, pirate of the South Pacific. If you want to know the true story of Captain Bligh, the man of mutinies, you'll find there's much more to the story than in the movies.
The theme here is that for centuries civilized man has dreamed of island life with beautiful willing women and few rules or responsibilities. This book shows the folly and tragedy of many and the luck and fortune of some who made it work. I have read most of these stories multiple times and find this a book that remains interesting. As always, Michener is well researched and quite compelling.

Carnival at Candlelight (Magic Tree House #33) - book cover picture

If you like adventures then you should read this fantastic book. The characters in this story are Jack, Annie, Kathleen and Teddy. This story takes place in Venice, Italy. The plot of the story is that Jack and Annie go to Venice, Italy to save the grand lady of the lagoon by doing many things. For example: "When the water beneath the moon rises, visit the grand lady of the lagoon. To find out where you need to go seek out a painter named Tiepolo." This story is funny and cool because it also has a book of magic spells. This book would be for children from 7-10 years old who love magic.

He Shall Thunder in the Sky - book cover picture

I really don't think I have to say more. Elizabeth Peters has done a wonderful job with He Shall Thunder in the Sky. I just hope with all of the closures she will not stop writing about the Emerson family. After all of these books, the characters have become like family. We have watched Ramses grow from being an irritating brat to a very handsome, sexy, appealing man - just like his father. It would be very hard to let them go at this point and not know what happens further with their lives. Again, this book was the ultimate in fantastic. Congratulations, Ms. Peters and thank you.
