The House of Mirth: Authoritative Text Backgrounds and Contexts Criticism (A Norton Critical Edition) - book cover picture

Although she was certainly flawed, I found myself wishing that I could be her. There were parts of her that made her fate so sad, and then there were parts of her which totally redeemed her, and reminded me of myself. I read a great many books, and this is certainly my favorite. In no other book have I found a character so complex and interesting as Lily. A week has passed since I read the book for the first time, and already I want to read it again, but I can't, since I recommended it so highly to a friend that she borrowed it from me...

Baby Animals - book cover picture

If you have read some of Gyo Fujikawa's other books, like "Oh, What a Busy Day", then you know they can have some strange stories. Why include the one about the two kids who go out into the woods and die? Still, this book is great. The drawings all have a very relaxed soft feeling and the underlying lesson is to be gentle with animals. This is a good book to share with your child at bedtime, while he/she is cuddled in your lap. The last page is a special treat, lots of baby animals. My daughter loves play a version of "I Spy" when we get to that page, pointing out the owl or monkey or other baby animals as I call out their names.

Every bit as enjoyable as Ender's Game

Ender's Shadow (Ender) - book cover picture

As the editorial review states, a parallel story to Ender's Game, taking us along the life of Bean, a brilliant kid with a mysterious past ... and dangerous enemies. Just as absorbing in its portrayal not only of the machinations of Battle School and its adult leaders, but of the lives of children as they really are, even the killers (which was what shocked many adults - and got them hysterical - about Ender's Game). We are given a little more depth into the final battle, and more interaction between Ender and Bean.As always, Card's prose and dialogue are sharp and thoughtful. A worthwhile read.

I've lost count of how many times I've read this book

The Hammer and the Cross - book cover picture

From the beginning you are caught up in the viking age, and the story of Shef, who changes the course of history through the help he recives from the Norse Gods in the form of visions. As an ametuer historian, I found this novel exceptional, and as someone who personally followes the old norse gods, I was not dissapointed. The Gods and Goddesses are portraied truly, I get the feeling the author has had experience with them himself, or at least the input of someone else who does. This is a long book by itself, full of action. The two books which follow it only get better.

An expression of love for her fellow humans

Mother Teresa : In My Own Words - book cover picture

This collection of quotes was put together by Jose Luis Gonzalez-Balado a year before Mother Teresa's death. It is an indispensable collection of wisdom for those who work with the poor or who are concerned for them. Her words are categorised into fifteen chapters some dealing specifically with her work among the poor and others being more general. Mother Teresa, was of course, a Roman Catholic nun and as a result much of her material centers on Christ and finding him among the poor. However, even if you are not Roman Catholic you will find the message endearing. It is one of love and concern for our fellow human beings.

I must say I am "hooked" on Sandra Brown. She really knows how to weave a tale and keep you coming back for more. Everytime I put the book down and came back to it, I was pleasantly captured. This book tackles some thorny social issues including racism, sexism, elitism, homophobia, wifebeating, rape, homelessness, crucification, and vigilantism. But, there's also some levity thrown in including a hilarious menage a trois scene. The author also has one of the best "white trash" characterizations I've come across in a long time. Luther, Henry, Billie Joe and their poor white trash mother were something else. And, I loved Ricky Sue! Bring her back in another book, please! I want to know about her and that FBI man, Pepperdyne. The villains in the book are truly hideous and there are some brutal and gross descriptions, so beware. I loved it, though. The book is suspenseful, socially conscious and has some pretty good sex thrown in for spice. Worth buying!

I own this book and I love it. This book reminds me of a tale that I read when I was 5 and it has been my favorite tale all my life. Juliet is a fantastic writer of Fair Folk and magical tense and romance to boot. I am 14 and I loved this book so much I read all 544 pages in 2 days. This book keeps the reader intatched to the story and it is also a tear dropper. I love this book and would recommend it to anyone i mean ANYONE that loves fantasy and a good refreshing of the soul.

Death Comes as the End - book cover picture

I couldn't put this book down once I reached the middle. I liked the setting in this book a lot more than Agatha Christie's usual modern era. The whole idea that the story situated in ancient Egypt gave me a sense that maybe the murderer wasn't mortal. For me, I was truely surprised at who the real culprit was. What I really enjoyed most about this story was that some characters stated interesting beliefs about human nature. The whole book to me seemed to be more than a mystery; it seemed to be a book of how certain people react to different situations, and how greed is evil. I absolutely enjoyed reading this book and would definitely recommend it.

Sacred Landscape: The Buried History of the Holy Land since 1948 - book cover picture

Meron Benvenisti is an Israeli politician and journalist who, as a child, accompanied his father as he went around Palestine renaming places with Hebrew names."Sacred Landscape" is as unbiased account of the catastrophe that physically has befallen the Palestinians -- and morally, the Israelis. The book is source, rather than the derivative propaganda produced by the fashionable hacks. But do check on the history -- look up the contemporary accounts written in the London Times and, allowing for its imperialist bias, see that the Jews have perpetrated a great crime on these unfortunate indigenous people.Benvenisti has integrity, good research, and is an excellent writer.Ian Clark.
