Men at Arms (Discworld Novels (Audio)) - book cover picture

One of the best Discworld novels. The Ankh-Morpork Watch is the most amazing set of policemen in the history of fiction. Beneath the not-so-thin veneer of hysterical humour, Pratchett's brilliant pen undercuts every possible literary (& other)genre & convention. As always, Pratchett's work makes you look at the world in a different way. This book will make you guffaw with laughter, but don't be surprised if there's a lump in your throat too.

Regarding Rita (Love & Laughter , No 49) - book cover picture

I loved reading Regarding Rita. Nate and Rita are memorable characters, and I couldn't wait to see what the town folk of Hooperville would cook up next to get these two star-crossed lovers together. Miss Pemberton is an excellent writer with a very witty style that keeps you in stitches from the first page to the last. She also has a very good feel for what small town life is like. I felt right at home.

A Crown of Swords (The Wheel of Time, Book 7) - book cover picture

This book was taken from the brain of an intelligent, charismatic, genious. It is a must read for anyone, even if you don't like fantasy novels. Nothing compares to how well written it is. The twists and turns in the plot in this book are mind boggling, I can never put it down.
I had the opportunity to meet the man who's mind this came from and was blown away by the his sheer presence.
He had a commanding presence around him that I doubt could be matched

The Perilous Gard (Puffin Newbery Library) - book cover picture

This impeccably researched retelling of the Tam Lin ballad is set in Tudor England, where Kate Sutton, an intelligent and wonderfully self-reliant lady-in-waiting, encounters an ancient people who steal children and perform human sacrifice. It is a cleverly rendered trompe-l'oeil fantasy: all the fantastic occurrences could have natural explanations. The enthralling struggle with the strange folk of Underhill and the satisfying, believable romance between Kate and Christopher make the book a real pleasure to read.

Julian - book cover picture

I've just finished an old, tattered paperback copy of JULIAN and have to say I was sad to have the story end. I was fascinated by all the characters, the history, the strange triple narration (the book is part memoir, part diary, part epistolary novel), and Vidal's own luminous prose. I would recommend JULIAN to anyone. It is probably the best historical novel I have ever read and it sorely deserves to be back in print.

Wildly entertaining

Book title: Rat Pack Confidential
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
Rat Pack Confidential - book cover picture

Shawn Levy gives a fascinating and compulsively readable account of the Rat Pack, along with a healthy dollop of background and "whatever happened to" information on each individual member. There are also many intriguing stories about peripheral figures such as Marilyn Monroe, Jack Kennedy (find out just how he won the election), and Sam Giancana, to name just a few. While Levy does not hesitate to point out the mistakes and faults of each man, this biography is neither sensational nor muck raking. One gets a sense that while the author is somewhat sympathetic towards his subjects (especially Peter Lawford, who was exiled by Frank Sinatra in a sad case of "shoot the messenger") he is also quite able to portray them objectively. Between the wild lives of its subjects and Levy's solid writing, this is a very enjoyable read.

Mike from NY should calm down

Case Closed : Lee Harvey Oswald and the Assassination of JFK - book cover picture

Mike should read this book before he complains about it. His objections merely repeat the comments found in some of the negative reviews below. However, none of his complaints are valid. In the paperback edition of the book, published in 1994, I believe, Posner includes a long footnote explaining why he doesn't spend much time with the views of the Failure Analysis CEO. I think his name is Roger McCarthy. McCarthy's testimony, which is given verbatim in Harrison Livingstone's silly book, Killing the Truth, does nothing to refute the Failure Analysis reconstruction of the shooting, which supports the single-bullet theory. As for the pathologist -- is it Boswell? (sorry, I don't have the book with me right now) -- his name shows up about six times in the index. If you look up the entries, you see that Boswell's name is mentioned because he took part in the autopsy. At no place in the book is Boswell quoted or paraphrased. Posner in no way suggests that he ever talked to him.

Mind Blowing Experience

Milk in My Coffee - book cover picture

I had always prided myself on being open-minded, but didn't realize how little I really knew until I read this book. It made me THINK and question even what I believed were my good intentions. Was never clear on my feelings concerning such (I might integrate, but would I protest my children doing so?) and then I had to take a good long, hard look at ME! Thank you for an eye-opening experience. I would advise *anyone* to read this amusing book. The plot twists concerning who Jordan held near and dear were SO hysterical! I feel Jordan had the ultimate revenge. "You do it to me and I'll do it to you, so to speak..." READ THE BOOK!!! The plot twists are something else and carried me right to the end of the book! But 'ya wanna know something? The ending left me wanting MORE! "C."

This was an excellent mystery, and I look forward to readingmore in this series. There were twists to the plot and the story tookoff in different directions as you read further in the book. While these weren't totally unexpected, they were still highly enjoyable. And it was great fun to read--imagine try to kill someone with an exploding snail! It left me wanting to know more about the characters and ready to read the next book in the series. This is another author that I will be adding to my "to read" list. END

very thorough, nice ref. for teachers or beginning students

Book title: Drawing Basics
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Spiral-bound
Drawing Basics - book cover picture

This book is used at our university as a reference tool for new teachers. It is a very thorough, basic instruction book which is broken down by the art elements and principles (positive and negative space, texture, value, perspective, etc.) as well as disciplinary issues (looking, developing patience). It includes a variety of specific drawing exercizes, specifying materials, subject matter, and directions. For example, an exercise on negative space uses "a plant form with a complex system of limbs or leaves, tacked up on a black background" as its subject. Each lesson also includes a critique section, which defines the goals of the lesson and gives a means of assessing the success of the product. This book is a comprehensive guide to all aspects of beginning black and white drawing. It is equally valuable to drawing teachers and those who are interested in teaching themselves.
