Faith of the Fallen (Sword of Truth, Book 6) - book cover picture

This book takes you back to Hartland near the beginning, and I sort of felt like I was at home there since it had been so long since I read about it. Then Nicci comes, captures Richard, you've seen it in the other reviews here so I'll not go into that.I was on the edge of my seat the entire way through this book. That really sums it up. While I don't think it was as good as Wizard's First Rule or Temple of the Winds, it comes right after. The title Faith of the Fallen isn't directly taken from the book either, like Soul of the Fire. It was a nice change too that this wasn't a 6th End of the World story in a row. Sure the Imperial Order is marching around but that would only turn the world to Socialism at worst...9/10.

An unexpected learning experience

The Control of Nature - book cover picture

Having completed my Master's thesis on a 300 year flood, I picked up this book to read about Old River and the Corps' struggle to hold its position. However, I found myself even more fascinated with the struggle of the Icelandic people against essentially the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (good luck) and the head-in-the-sand mentality of Southern Californians when it comes to mudslides. McPhee is as artful in explaining geology as geology is complex. When I read his descriptions of complex geological situations put into simple terms, I smile, chuckle, shake my head, and read the line over and over. I just can't believe such complex concepts can be explained so simply using the same language I use everyday. The man is good.

A masterpiece that stayed in my mind for many nights

Book title: Shutter Island
Rating: 5/5

Shutter Island - book cover picture

This kept me up at night reading because it was such a twisted and gripping psychological thriller. When I finally finished it, I had to read a Dave Barry humor book to shut my mind down so that I could get some rest! This is a complete masterpiece, all coming together in the end for a biting twist that makes complete sense and leaves the reader feeling haunted. Anything having to do with a psychiatric hospital of the 1950's is bound to be scary, but this goes beyond your wildest expectations.

This is an intense read--Lehane had my heart rate up for the last 1/3 of the book. The dream sequences were very vivid, and this was the first time that I really felt an author had actually captured the non-linearity of a dream in text form.

On a side note, the name Shutter Island is fictional, but when I made my Mom read this, she said Lehane is describing Thompson's Island, off the coast of Boston. She used to play in the abandoned forts there as a child.

I would like to say this is one of the best books i've read. this is in my top five. My number 1 being the Lord of the Rings trilogy. in this review i am refering to the whole series as one book. my favorite part in this book is the reveiw Jakes teacher give him for his paper "my understanding of truth," when it ment nothing the teacher was talking about. he was just writing a bunch of nonsense gibberish. alhthough this stuff he would soon come to know. all in all a great book and a good series.

and I loved it. Richard Bach is inspirational, and provides a meaningful tale that inspires and frees the spirit. If you are at a certain point in your life where you are looking for inspiraation and answers to unknown questions, this is a great book. If you are not at that point you will find it new age pop religious babble. It is a 5 star book for some, and a 1 star book for others, but why take the chance, read it. At worst you spent a few hours reading, is that so bad?

I read Singh's Fermat's Enigma and loved it. This book is also great. The text describes in understandable terms the science of cryptography. Examples of what is being described are provided throughout the book. Singh has managed to create a fascinating account of the evolution of cryptology and he shows how significant historical events were effected by the use of codes. Despite the technical content of some of the material, Singh has created an easily readable absorbing book.

Simply a masterpiece.

Book title: Atonement : A Novel

Atonement : A Novel - book cover picture

This is the first book written by McEwan I've read, but it certainly won't be my last. In Atonement, a 13 year old girl does something dramatic that she'll regret for the rest of her life. Her actions greatly affect the lives of her sister Cecilia, and Cecilia's friend childhood friend Robbie.

This book is superbly written; the prose is just wonderful. McEwan does an excellent job of describing the characters, and letting us see things through their eyes. The story itself is very entertaining, and has some twists in it to keep you guessing. I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves literature.

"In the words of those iMac ads: Yum. This book is a genuine treat. Angier not only brilliantly unmasks the simplistic assumptions behind evolutionary psychology's approach to gender -- the whole "I am my eggs" woman-is-nurturer man-is-hunter schtick that fuels everything from Home Improvement to the Lewinsky debates on Crossfire -- but she does so in lucid, genuinely witty prose....An outstanding corrective, and a fun read too." after reading the first 8 books in the left behind series, i was left with nothing to read. i wandered into the religious fiction section of a book store, randomly picking up books. this caught my eye because mrs. lahaye's name. reconizing it, i decided to give mr. lahayes other half a try. at first i was leary, but as the book went on i found that i was very drawn to it. by the time the book ended i went on a mad search for the second book. it was heart warming and makes me hope that one day when we have kids, that we will be lucky enough to have this type of neighborhood family around us.

Rinaldi weaves a timely tale

Book title: Mine Eyes Have Seen
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
Mine Eyes Have Seen - book cover picture

Although Mine Eyes Have Seen is an historical novel set in the years preceding the Civil War, the personal story of Annie Brown could be one of any teenager who has faced the trials of living with an emotionally abusive parent. Rinaldi portrays Annie's life as the daughter of abolitionist John Brown as one where the girl alternates between trying to gain her father's favor and attempting to assert her own rights as a human being. The great irony that John Brown was, at the same time, preparing to give his own life and the life of his followers to focus the attention of the country on the rights of slaves as human beings is not overlooked by Annie or Rinaldi. As always, Rinaldi brings the characters from the pages of our history books to life for the reader, this time with an even greater resonance for today's society.
