Ultramarine - book cover picture

He tells what he sees
and what he experiences
it can be Bonnard's life story
in paintings of his wife
it can be his own effort to see the sea and the sky
and not let his mind intervene
he tells and usually what he tells
is a story
and the stories are interesting stories ironic stories
of his own life
and his need to change it
to plunge into clear water
as his father did
or to write with a sharp clear pen
like Kafka
after eight hours too many looking at his watch in the office
he writes these poems and tells these stories
and we reading them become more alive to the life in us
how strange and more real.

Falls the Shadow - book cover picture

What I liked about this book was that Simon de Montfort wasn't given a whitewash like the characters Thomas More and Thomas Beckett have been given. All three men had great faults (More was a strong proponent of burning protestants at the stake; Beckett had a high martyr complex that exacerbated his problem far more than Henry ever did). Penman shows us how great a man Simon de Montfort truly was, faults and all. The accuracy and attention to detail is what makes this book truly great (although Edward was a great king in real history).

A Child Called "It": One Child's Courage to Survive - book cover picture

The book "A Child Called It" by Dave Pelzer was probably the best book I have read this year. This book talks about Dave's childhood when his mother would beat him and tell him he was a bad boy. Dave heard his mother say he was a bad boy for so long that he would believe her. While Dave was with his mother, he was put through so much pain that you would think that the kid would want to kill himself. In the first book, Dave Pelzer was not fed for almost a whole week so he went into the cafeteria and ate frozen food like hot dogs and when he got home his mom made him throw-up to see if he ate or not. When she saw that he ate something, she made him eat the hot dogs that he threw-up. I would recommend this book to everyone; even if you don't like reading, you should still read this book. It will make you cry because this kid was put through so much pain and your life is probably so perfect that you don't need to worry about getting hurt. I would recommend you read this book.

The Rise and Fall of the British Empire - book cover picture

James heroically captures the depravity of the British Empire. From the exploits of the King Henry V and his eight wives, to the definitive naval victories of Lord Horatio Nelson in the Hudson Bay, this magnificent tome is a must-read for anyone who enjoys provocative, seductive storytelling. James is particularly successful in his portrayal of the moral bankruptcy which heralded the fall of the "greatest empire on the face of this earth. EVER."Indie

The Brothers K - book cover picture

The Brothers K by Duncan is by far one of the most beautiful books I have ever read. Duncan has an uncanny ability to immerse the reader in his world, so much so that I wish the characters were real. His characters are well developed, each believable in their struggles and good times. He writes with such compassion and authenticity, it's hard to believe that this is a work of fiction. His novel spans decades, but flows seamlessly. It is written with such feeling and honesty that this book can appeal to anyone. Everyone can find a character that they can connect to. I cannot recommend this book any more....other than to say that every time I read it I find something new that makes me love it more.

Invisible Cities (A Harvest/Hbj Book) - book cover picture

Like the cities imagined here (most based on real-life counterparts), the plot isn't a standard A-to-B-to-C kind of thing. I read this book in university and admired the richness of detail, the broad sweep of the panoramas explored, the simple beauty of Polo's "racontage" to the great Kubla Kahn. Reading this book envelopes you in other worlds effortlessly, beautifully, majestically. So much so, your immediate surroundings melt into anonimity. Passionate writing, exquisite imagery. Weaver's translation is sumptuous! 'Nuff said!

Nora Roberts' Best

Divine Evil - book cover picture

I thought this was one of Nora Roberts' best novels so far. It had the perfect balance of romance and suspense, and all the details were so vivid that I felt I was right there with all the characters. The ending was a complete surprise; not what I expected at all. I was totally engrossed in this book from the time I opened it up until the time I finished the last page. If you only read one Nora Roberts book, make it this one!

Whores and Other Feminists - book cover picture

For years I've considered myself to be a freak of sorts: I consider myself to be a feminist and a strong, secure woman who has a positive self and body image, yet, at the same time, I've wanted to strip. Not for money, but for my own enjoyment. In this book, it's explained that there is room for all of us in the feminist movement. It's about time that we as women stop demonizing men and begin to understand that women can be whores or porn stars, or stripers an not be an automatic victim. I found this book to be VERY refreshing.

Great Book for the Study of Indian Cinema

National Identity in Indian Popular Cinema 1947-1987 (Texas Film Studies) - book cover picture

This book offers an in depth study of Indian popular cinema, concentrating mainly on films made during the 1950's and 60's after India gained nationhood. The book provides insight into how Indian cinema dramatically influenced popular culture by reinforcing values or creating new ones, and highlighting/recreating Indian history through film. The book also sheds a great deal of light on the symbolisim that is a part of all Indian films. I would reccomend this book to anyone who has a love of Indian cinema or who may want to learn more about it. A good historical analysis with many good photos.

Red Planet - book cover picture

Three weeks prior to my writing this, I was given an assignment in my English class. We were supposed to choose an "outside reading book" and we could choose from a romance, western, science fiction, or a mystery. I naturally headed for the mystery section, but couldn't find a thing. I tried numerous books the next day, but none were appealing until I started "Red Planet". I was captivated and continued reading. I found the book to be "comfortable", and I felt as if part of the plot. I finished the book within a matter of days, and then asked my mom where she had gotten the it. To my shock and disappointment, she told me that it was a library discard that she rescued from a give-away box. Take this from a picky reader: Give this a try. You will fall in love with Jim, Frank, Doc MacRae, and especially, Willis. Don't be afraid to try something new, especially Robert Heinlein's "Red Planet"!
