Peter the Great - book cover picture

This book is absorbing to the point that you have withdrawals when you are done reading it. It is an instant classic chronicalling not only the Russia that Peter inherited and changed, but also the European and middle eastern empires of the time. Peter is a very interesting and important person as was this time in the history of the world. This book puts you in the middle of the massive social and economic changes that Peter the great made to bring Russia into the modern european world. The interactions between Peter and his people and the struggles that they fought is enough to make this a great book but the deep coverage of the details makes it an excellent book to read.

The Catcher in the Rye - book cover picture

Seeing so many "one star" reviews for this book is somewhat disturbing, it certainly seems to say something about Humanity: That generally people have very little understanding of each other. Holden understands the Human race, sees its many flaws, and it is this which drives him into his depression. In other words the people who didn't understand this book are not the Holdens of this world, they are proabbly the "phonies". Those who truly did, I don't mean they could just relate to him, they truly understood him, are in it with Holden: Trying to struggle through the absolute horror of life. I am not just being melodramatic, life isn't a nice business and it is those who "misunderstand" this book which that make it that way. (see also "Misunderstood" my previous review).

One of the best books I've ever read

The Phantom Tollbooth - book cover picture

I just finished reading this book again, and if I haven't read it at least 100 times, then I'm close. I started reading this book as a young child. I became very attached to Milo, and began carrying the book around everywhere. Through the years, everytime I have to face something difficult, or whenever I'm feeling "bummed", I read this book for comfort. What I've found is that as I read the same words again and again, they have taken on new meaning as I have gotten older. The story that used to just be entertainment, now helps me to gain insight into myself, and situations I may face. This book has become a companion to me, and I highly recommend it to anyone of any age.

My Review of Out of the Dust

Literature Guide: Out of the Dust (Grades 4-8) - book cover picture

I recently read Out of the Dust and I enjoyed it. It has a family so realistic who withstands so many hardships. Billie and her family live with dust day in and day out.The thing that really touched me was that through all the duststorms, they never complained. Sure they could have complained, but they didn't. When most people today complain, they complain about breaking nails and stocks not being high enough and that is really nothing to complain about. The family could have complained and they didn't.My opinion of this book is, that you can't takes so many things for granted in life. If I had to rate this book from 1 to 5, I would give this book a 10.

Splendid scenery and mood

Book title: The Hound of the Baskervilles
Rating: 5/5

The Hound of the Baskervilles - book cover picture

This great novel is very different from the short stories. Here, Holmes and Watson face a mystery in touch with supernatural forces, coming from an old legend about the Baskerville family. And the supernatural is only natural in that environment: the moor. A low land with marshes, dark and wild. Also here, Watson is portrayed as a brave man, intelligent and daring. They work on the investigation separately for a good part of the book, until, of course, they get the bad guy and uncover the motives and methods of the criminal. The best of this book is not so much the plot -which is very good- but the mood, the ambience in which the whole tale unfolds is just great. I will stop here because this is the kind of book one should not spoil by revealing parts of the plot. Just read it.

Ah yes, I remember how great this was!

Book title: The Sword of Shannara

The Sword of Shannara - book cover picture

Just for fun as I was putting around Amazon, I thought I'd take a peek at Terry Brooks' works again. All my life after orinally reading J.R.R. Tolkien, I'm a 34 year old successful entrepreneur now, I've sought to find an equal to the master storyteller Tolkien. I've stumbled upon a few, but none to surpass him yet...so far I'd have to say #1: "The Fellowship of the Rings" Trilogy, #2: The "Shannara" series, and #3: the David Eddings series. They are all great escapes when you need one, though it has been a while since I've read them. I hunger for more. Some reviewers complain that the others are all ripoffs on Tolkien, but I think we all need to admit, what did we want after finishing Tolkien? More, more, more! So these are the next best substitutes, n'est pas? And they are good. Look at really old maps of the British Isles and you'll find how Tolkien was inspired with his names.I welcome any recommendations for further reading.

A baseball book that is very different...

Tim McCarver's Baseball for Brain Surgeons & Other Fans - book cover picture

This is a unique and wonderfull look at baseball at the end of the century. It's funny, on the mark and the most educational sports book I've ever read. The book truly teaches the fan (experienced or novice) so much about the inner game - not talking stats here - that one feels that you've earned a Phd in baseball when you complete the book. Tim McCarver is not only baseball's best brain, he's its best teacher as well. If you think you know baseball - read this book - you'll learn a hell of a lot more. And most of all - it's fun!

A classic

Handbook of the Indians of California (Bulletin (Smithsonian Institution. Bureau of American Ethnology), 78.) - book cover picture

Much of the research for this book was done more than a century ago, yet the hefty volume (just under 1,000 pages in all) still speaks with authority and insight. Kroeber was a pioneer in the field of anthropology, and it is fortunate for the study of the California Indians that he concentrated much of his research efforts on the diverse and quite numerous native inhabitants of that state. But some of his work is also of value in studying the Indians of neighboring areas, notably Arizona. Kroeber's pioneering researches into Mohave life and culture are still valuable today.

This book is valuable not only to anthropologists but also to historians, for a very great part of the knowledge that Kroeber preserved in this volume has entirely vanished, with Kroeber's record of it the only evidence that it once existed. And the great professor's writing style is always spare, always clear. Handbook of the Indians of California is a classic of its time and field.
